Who's running one?
Deciding not to sas my '98 4runner (until I change my mind again tomorrow) and want to run 35's. Eventually will go to 5.29s in the diffs but how would it be on stock 4.10s? 3 inch lift on now, maybe add a 1 inch body lift or just beat back the fender wells? Have 1/2 inch wheel spacers on now. I do daily it and slow is ok, for now.
Just looking for opinions from those with experience

With the body lift you might clear in the fenderwell, but a BFH should clear things up. Best to tub the firewall.
It will be a complete dog on 35's with 4.10's.
I've been in the same boat with the wifes 4Runner, but we are going to go for boke and SAS it.

I’m on 35s but I did sas. I moved my front axle 3” forward.
My 4runner is a manual and I’m running 4.88 gears. They seem to be the proper gearing for 35s.

Mine's an auto. Thinking about 5.29's but not sure yet. Guess I'll wait to go bigger till I find time to regear. Anyone have thoughts on 4.88's over 5.29's?
Thanks all for the replies

I ran Yukon 5.29 gears with 33" tires on my old truck. It was a stick shift and 4 cylinder, though. This was a little short for flat but was nice climbing hills. It wasn't really a matter of running out of RPM before speed but at cruising speed the RPMs were high enough to get a little bit of drone.

I'd think 4.10 on 35 would be very frustrating.

Guessing theoretical strength is a magical. In 8" diffs a 5.29 is 37/7 and 4.88 is 39/8 and 4.56 is 41/9. Sort of the standard is 4.10, which is 41/10 or 37/9 (pre-1982, actual is 4.11). Obviously the 5.29 pinion is likely the weakest but the 4.88 ring is weakest (which, you may notice, in 4.88 factory gear sets the ring gear is slightly thicker). If you go to a 29 spline gear set it's probably axle housing deflection causing issues more than than material or tooth counts.

More gear reduction in the diff the smaller the pinion gear gets. I stuck with 4.88 to retain more gear strength.
everyone says that. I finally broke my first R&P after 25ish years of hard wheeling. All but one of my 4x4's have had 5.29's.... they are alot stronger than people think.

I would stick to 33s until you decide to SAS. 33s do plenty imo and I don't think 35s make things massively different if you are still running stock IFS. Also get 255 pizza cutters and the necessity to regear is lessened.

285's and 4.10's are frustrating in our 3rd gen 3.4 auto 4runner.
Can confirm....

Have you noticed a real difference between wide vs pizza cutter? or have you just dug through all the forums online on this subject? I'm currently running 285/75/16 Yokohama MT's with spacers.

I found that a Goldilocks balance on 33x10.50, not too wide, not too narrow. I ran 33x9.50 but they didn't have quite enough flotation for rocks and would dig too much in deep sand and snow.

My favorite tire ever on the 1991 was a 33x10.50x15 BFG MT. Those run slightly narrower than spec and it was great out of the box for everything except snow. That's what I ran on Rubicon with 5.29, worked fine. I think 4.88 would have been nicer on highway without too big a hit to crawl.

Found the same with my Tacoma on 235/85R16 (32x9.25). Just a bit too narrow for an all arounder. Seems to me small-midsize Toyota weight and dimensions seem to balance well on around 9.5" to 10.5" wide treads, so 265/75R16, 255/85R16, etc. are common on less hard core trucks.

I jumped straight to 255s when I went to 33s. Never even messed with 285s
