Never been on one of these.
I don't have chains or those recovery boards. Do we need anything different than a normal summer run?

Just hard recovery points. The normal process is, drive, get stuck, get yanked out, repeat.

Alrighty folks, I've rounded up another trainer and several volunteers to join us! Our thought is to caravan 4 miles up the trail from the Columbine OHV lot to a site we often use for winter training that's adjacent to the trail and away from the OHV lot craziness (hopefully!). We would like to spend 60-90 minutes briefly talking about our organization and then demonstrating our way through snow recovery options from shovels > traction boards > hi lift > kinetic rope > winching and talk a little about tire chains. BUT! We know this is supposed to be a snow run, not a recovery class, and these always tend to run longer than planned, so let us know if you would prefer we focus on just one or two things, or run with the whole kit and kaboodle!

Couple questions. The place where we meet is that at the trail and low speed on snow or dirt. I don’t that area. I have skinny tires no locking axes on my 45. Obviously I will trailer it there. I will bring four chains or mount them prior if that makes sense. I definitely planning to be there if the passes are dry.

The meet location is a large parking lot accessed by a mostly maintained gravel road. Screenshot_20250119_221211_Maps.jpg

hey everyone! :woot:
Looks like we have a good group brewing and we have been getting some good snow lately so we are on track to have a fun day.

@sierramechanica will be doing some safe recovery practice demos and we encourage anyone interested to take part, this is a great opportunity to learn and this will also help break up our large group up somewhat.

Our reservations at Beau Jos in Idaho Springs is at 4pm, under my name / Rising Sun

Basic Guidelines:
-Keep an eye on the truck in front of you and behind you- watch your spacing as we don't want to leave anyone behind but we also don't want to be too tightly grouped. Backing up is inevitable and will happen at some point

-Anticipate where you are stopping- try to avoid stopping on an incline or in a rut as it may make resuming progress difficult

-Maintain good communication- on inclines and declines, we want one truck at a time to make sure everyone makes it and avoid collisions. Call out when you are clear for the next truck to continue or if you loose progress.

-Know your recovery points and gear-
make sure you are attaching to a proper rated point and using rated gear. If you are not sure, please ask

-Stay hydrated, use sunscreen and bring your cold weather gear-

There have been a number of years where the hill near the bottom is super icy and exiting on the way down you lose control and are basically a bobsled. One year @JadeRunner actually ran into the back of a j**p that had decided to park at the bottom of the hill. The takeaway is that if it is like that this year, you need go one rig at a time, and radio back when it is clear for the next rig to slide down.

I will add communicate with others that might be trying to get up that hill while we are lined up to come down.

Hi DomofTheDead,

I have a 21' Tacoma. Is it ok to use the Factor 55 - hitchLink for recovery point (see image) See image attached. Also is there anything else I need besides, shovel and recovery strap? I have a midland 2-way radio!

Cheers,
NovaTacoma :)
