Looking great! You should find or fabricate the correct headache rack for it and mount your spare in the bed.

Love those mudflaps too. I have a similar set I've been holding onto for years that I want to install on my 60. Need to figure out how to mount them.

Are your tires the tsl radials or bias ply? I've been on the hunt for 32" swampers for my 40, but they are hard to find. No one has them in stock.

That's a good idea on the headache rack! I couldn't bare hiding the cool Toyota lettering on the tailgate and plan on painting in the letters white eventually. Mine are bias ply, I think that's all they offer in 32x9.5 r15. I ordered them from 4WP and it took about a month to get them in.

Yours would look great with the proper rack since it's so utilitarian.

There's the classic bed-side.

Build Update! A few thousand miles later and I am still bumping around in the Stout. I had to replace a coil and it needs new front ball joints soon. Other than that, all is peachy.

Wow! I thought I updated this recently and I obliviously have not. The Stout is still going strong. I've used it for all kinds of truck stuff this last year. From hauling manure, gravel, scrap metal, and lumber to going to the hardware store, hamburger stand, getting a ticket for stopping in the crosswalk and attending the Colorado Yota Expo, I forgot to take a single picture at the expo.

I renewed the plates so that means a planned 5 more years of wonderful ownership for me. It's hard to believe I've already owned it that long. I changed the oil and did a little overall inspection with nothing to report but my skepticism of the ball joints. So, I think I will finally be replacing them for peace of mind, but that's about it.

I haven't mentioned it before but my windshield has a bb hole in it and there has been no replacement availability. I just accepted it and moved on, however, there is a gent who is going to start producing new Stout windshields. How lucky we are to have such a capable community of owners.

I haven't gone wheeling in it this year and I should probably make a point to take on some double track at the least before the snow fly's. Until then here is a photo dump of the past year or so.

Holy cow! I haven't posted here in over a year. The Stout has been great. Still using it like a truck all through 2024. I renewed the plates for 5 more years, took many trips to the hardware store, used it to haul 1/4 ton of gravel for the back yard, did a Junkyard run with @Monterado, and of course it attended the 2024 Yota expo.

I have been driving the Stout about once or twice a month since I finished building it. However, after noticing that this spring I made it a priority to drive it more often. Which I have, about once or twice a week. It's a great little truck and I think it's time that I do a few things to help make it better for my life now.

The first thing I would like to do is find a topper for it. This is going to be no small ask and I imagine Ill likely have to modify anything that I find. Below is an inspirational images of the direction I would like to go. Something simple and of the era is what I'm looking for. I want this so I can store some of my tools and for keeping stuff out of the weather and not worry about it.

The next thing I need to do is get a key for the door locks made. I have been driving this around with no way to lock the doors for 5 years. Right now, I don't drive it places where I need to leave it for longer than 30 - 45 minutes because of that. Thats been an obvious contributing factor to me not driving it more often.

The last things are some maintenance Items and updates. I need to do lower ball joints. I don't know when they were done, and since this is a 3rd gen 4runner underneath I'm afraid of the ball joints failing. Another item is the radiator. Right now, it has the 4runner radiator with 3 electric fans. It cools fine with the exception of stop and go traffic in 90+ degree weather. I don't really want to be driving this thing in 90 degree weather in stop and go traffic, but I don't want to be anxious about it overheating when it happens. I have done some research and think I've found another style radiator that will fit better and allow me to use a stock shroud and mechanical fan. Thats going to require some more research and likely won't happen until next spring. However, both of these items contribute to me not driving it more frequently.

So that's it. I want to fix the things that make me think twice about hopping in it and driving it to work, dinner, or to visit friends.

Did you contact the guy in Morro Bay that was giving away the original Stout topper on the Facebook group?

Also, I am pretty sure older FJ40 door locks are the same or very close to Stout. Might be easier to swap them out than getting them re- keyed. The Stout uses a 3 digit code vs the 40 using a 4 digit code.

If you need someone to go down and pick up that top in Morro Bay, I probably could do that next weekend and then store it at my place in Monterey for a hot minute until we can figure out a way to get it back to you.

The guy selling that original Stout topper, Joe, is a close friend of mine. He had zero interest and needed it moved, so he cut it up and got rid of it sadly. It was for sale for over a year for next to nothing.
Bummer! Little piece of Toyota history gone. Hopefully he didnt cut up the 45 it was mounted on. ;)

Pic for historical reference. Might have been the last one in existance:

I message Joe about this yesterday. I remember we were texting about the topper a while back and he said something to the effect of "this weekend it's getting cut up and hauled off." Apparently at the very last minute a guy with an HJ45 took it away and it lives on his truck. I'm happy to say I was wrong about the fate of the topper!
