To complicate things, newer Toyota autos have the hill-start Assist Control (HAC)...

Another cheat code...

Valid point, unfortunately on the newest vehicles with electric e-brakes they automatically disconnect when put in drive so you can't actually test it. You can test the service brakes but not the e-brake.
Hadn't considered this. I've heard of electric parking brakes and HAC (which to me is high altitude compensation) but have zero first hand experience so I can only leave my thoughts based on a quite out of date information.

Good discussion. At Tech Inspection I would fail Manuals if they didnt pass the test (Stall without moving). For Autos I would not, but tell them to get it adjusted mentioning both adjustment spots with the center console easier as a first try. With the Auto Transmission in Park as a brake, I don't believe it is a requirement for an off road event. I had confirmed this with more senior folks when I started doing Tech Inspections 20 years ago. I ask them to engage the e-brake, put it in drive and take their foot off the brake.

If you leave the truck running on a Manual, the e-brake needs to hold the vehicle if you get out because you will have to be in Nuetral. Not the safest option as accidents still have happened

If get out of an Automatic and don't put the tranny in park, well you can't really help stupid  If in park and it doesnt hold the vehicle, then you have bigger problems

I read some posts on the internet that said the ebrake should hold on an Automatic in Drive with 1200 rpms, which I do not feel is correct. Most others said no gas applied in Drive, Reverse and Nuetral on a hill is all it has to hold when engaged

Feel free to correct me if you have a different opinion.

@Romer might only point out that with traditional auto and manual parking brakes the only thing preventing it rolling is the prawl in the transmission, which is not unknown to fail. They are after all normally expected to only need to hold a vehicle in a parking lot and not pointed nose down on the Little Sluice. I don't know but I assume Toyota overdesigned them in our trucks but I still wouldn't trust it. Here again, I have very little experience since all I keep is 75W90 on the shelf I'm acutely aware of parking brakes...

Agreed, I do engage the e-brake when on trails on slopes. Although I haven't ever had an issue with the Tranny holding my truck on my daughters steep driveway :) I am really only talking about Automatic transmissions.

Both my wife's 2021 RAV4 and my 2024 250 series have electric motor operated parking brakes. I wonder if they even have an adjustment? They do have a way to be operated via a switch though, otherwise they are automatically engaged when the shifter is put into park. I've never tried to operate mine via the switch, I should try that when it is in P, R or N and see how well it works.

Well the clutch bleed on my 40 lasted until the last few miles in Moab driving back to HQ after the 40's Only Run! Ordered a new clutch master and slave cylinders from Georg, hope to mess with it this week.

I have been chasing a gremlin in the AFI fuel injection on the 40 for the past 6 months. I have the same kit in the 60 and it runs like a dream. Went down the rabbit hole replacing a bunch of parts, the last being another GM ECM with the same results of random power shutdown. Yesterday I decided to pull the HEI distributor and give it one last test with the meter and to my surprise I found a tiny e-clip hanging around in the base of the dizzy. There are 4 small posts on the top of the advance mechanism that appear to be there for weights in the case of a vacuum advance setup. All I can figure is the e-clip must have been shorting between pickup points or the base from time to time and shutting down the ECM. When it died I just needed to pull the power lead to the ECM and the truck would fire right back up. Took her for a half hour drive this afternoon and no issues. Actually a bit of luck that I even spotted this little sucker.

Haven't done anything yet, but these will be going on the 81 soonish (like in a few months) method 703's in a 17x9.

They're bluer than I'd like and what was shown in pictures online. Hopefully they'll look decent enough on the 81.

If your spring cleaning includes scrap metal, here’s what it’s going for today over at Atlas.

Those old aluminum rims and brass radiators are money! The copper was about 12 feet of three-quarter inch pipe. Money.

Got my Cruise Moab raffle prizes in from Delta!
Some serious beef on these rear lower control arms! Hope these will hold up better than others have.
I also got a few of those things that I’ve always wanted but never pulled the trigger on till now.
My brother actually won the 1500 dollar gift certificate, but gave it to me since he has no 80 or 100.

I ended up spending all weekend doing maintenance and repairs.
What started out as a plan to change the oil and relocate the steering stabilizer, ended up including a transmission flush and tearing the top off the engine to replace the knock sensors… again. This of course involves draining the coolant and removing the fuel rail to get to the lower intake manifold. Because heaven forbid we put knock sensors on the outside of the block.
But I guess it was a bit of a blessing in disguise, as the lower intake manifold gaskets were apparently cooked.

I also had a VERY close call with a washer almost making it into cylinder 1.

Fun times.

Spent Wednesday doing the rear wheel bearings on the FJ Cruiser at 170K. Not a fan of the limited space that the Toyota engineers give you to remove and reinstall the parking brake shoes on the inside of the rotor hat. The seals had definitely failed on the factory bearings so it is much quieter in the cab with the new bearings.
