cheap EV leases

I've mentioned in a few threads about getting a pretty cheap lease on an Ioniq 5 and have had enough questions I figured I'd start a thread.

I started looking into a cheap EV car to drive the family around in and offset my gas bill. My goal was to not sell any of my cruisers, but just add a car where all the costs for that car would be less than my current gas bill.

My gas bill with the 3 cruisers was a minimum of 600/mo so an all in lease cheaper than that was my goal. While replacing one of our cruisers with an EV would absolutely save money, my research for keeping them all and only offsetting my gas bill always resulted in not being worth it.

I started seeing videos about a new change that happened recently that allows dealerships to take all of the federal and state tax incentives, and apply that amount to the lease period. So for math purposes, let's assume a 55k msrp car gets total tax incentives of 15k. Instead of applying the 15k to the 55k, they calculate how much they would make on a 2 year lease and apply it to only that timeframe. So, if they expected to make 20k for a 2 year lease on a 55k msrp car, and they can apply 15k of incentives to that portion of the cars value, they only need 5k on the lease from the buyer. Cheaper cars like a leaf, they may make all the money for the lease on the tax incentives the dealership collects and not have to charge the buyer much of anything. There are dealerships offering a 9/mo lease on a leaf for instance.

Around that same time, I got this email for a car I was actually kinda interested in.

150/mo sounded great but I needed to crunch the numbers to make sure I didn't somehow end up paying more than 600/mo all in at the end of the month.

I went to the dealership, and left once they told me it would be 150/mo + tax which came out to 175 or something. I told them I saw 150/mo in the email and was not interested in paying any more. They called me a day later saying if I would pay it all up front, then they would let me pay a total of 3600 for the entire 2 years and it was mine, sales tax included. That came out to 150/mo if I were to pay over time. I think @Westward Cruiser may have gotten an even better deal.

I then got a quote for my insurance and that came out to 120/mo. Then you also need to factor in registration, which was 1200.

So, all in, I paid 3600 for the car including sales tax, 1200 for registration, and then I have insurance costs of 120/mo or 2880 for the 2 years. Over the 2 years, that comes out to 7,680, or 320/mo.

- edit - an obvious miss in the calculation is how much more my elec bill goes up per month due to the car. For 1200 miles per month, it costs me about $40. We tend to fill up for free at electrify america while doing the grocery shopping, but if we didn't that would be a little more.

Also, while not everyone can get the tax incentives when purchasing a car outright, depending on your income, everyone can take advantage of the tax incentives this route.

Wow. Just checked and by me it’s $239/24 months and $3,999 down, for the SEL AWD.

@satchel - How is the Ioniq 5 to drive? Is it a well-built vehicle?
It has been great. No issues so far and seems well built. Luckily if something breaks it doesn't cost me anything. One annoyance is that the SEL trim does not have seat/steering memory per driver so you have to adjust it yourself. For 55k msrp I would have thought that would be included.

I like the highway assist features which make road tripping very easy. I was initially worried about charging infrastructure on road trips but so far that hasn't been an issue. Taking it to west Texas for Thanksgiving so fingers crossed.

this is great, thanks for sharing! Toying with the idea of selling our Subaru in favor of another EV...

The fiscally responsible part of me says I should have leased something EV rather than buy my 250-series. But my local dealer options are way less and I have to have an AWD so its not like I could just ink up for a Leaf.

I got a pretty smoking lease deal on a Toyota Bz4X back in May from Mountain States Toyota. I too was looking for a vehicle just to use as my daily and take advantage of my solar power on my house. I also wanted to take advantage of all of the credits that come along with EVs. The thing with the Bz4X is that they are built in Japan and don't get the same same credits as the US built EVs so Toyota is forced to have to match what us built EVs are getting out of their pocket.

After is was all said and done I was able to get 17,000 off the top of the vehicle price because of Colorado EV credit of 5,000 and the Toyota gave me almost 12,000 off in EV and lease credits. Final cost of the car was around 30,000 and on a lease my payments are 264 a month.

I had a 240v plug installed by a pro installer in my garage and bought a charge point level 2 charger. Xcel gave me 500.00 back on the install of the plug and I'm currently enrolled in their EV charging program where if you charge your car between 9pm and 6am they will give you an additional bill credit at the end of the year.

Since May of this year it has only cost me about 120 bucks total, not monthly to charge my car. Toyota advertise it at 240 miles per charge but I have been getting up to 280 miles per charge which is more than sufficient to get me around for a week

Lucky you're in a land cruiser club and not a Tesla club. We'll forgive you for buying the Land Cruiser instead ;)

FYI to get the full $7,500 from Colorado the car has to be less than $35k, which is pretty much the Chevy Equinox. Otherwise you can get $5k off rom CO and $7,500 from fed. We're tempted right now too.

Not trying to stir the pot or get political so please dont go down that road but if people are considering an EV, you better get one before the end of the year. Sounds like the incoming administration will likely kill all EV credits. I have read this through multiple sources, here is the latest i came across.

A co-worker was talking about this a few weeks ago. Seemed like there was some sort of missed bit in the math, but I guess not. Right now, just looking for a cheap car so the 98 4Runner can be be a little more free to do tougher off road things with out the fear on it not making it to work the next day. Thanks for the info.

We just picked up a ioniq 5 limited for a 2 year lease. All service (tire rotations) covered. 2 years free charging with electrify america and Katie can charge for pretty cheap at work too. Easy enough way to try out an EV for a couple years.

Played with the "self-driving" functions last night + HUD and I was pretty impressed.

Saw that TFL Trucks just leased a Fiat 500 e for 0$ a month for 27 months. You need to pay taxes -$1300 or so, and the registration which I would guess would be about the same. The range of 18 miles and the small size make it a city car for sure. Not sure how they would sell one for $35K new though. I just do not see the value. Plus I do not have a guy named Tony to fix it again. - Oh then there is insurance too.

Yeah you definitely have to include taxes and insurance in the math on these. At the same time we will save 600-700 gallons of gas a year and most of our charging will be free

I also picked up one of these inexpensive leases on an Ioniq 5 limited AWD on Saturday. I’ve only put ~150 miles on it, but I’m impressed overall. The materials, finish, noise level, ride quality and comfort are superior to our Model Y long range, but the Tesla is much sportier and quicker with much better tech. For a the price of this lease however, I don’t think there is a better car on the market. It will be fun to try it out for the next 2 years!
