Some shocks with stems have a hole that a allen wrench can fit in. that will solve the shock body spinning problem when tightening.
LC shocks just have the flats up there. Billie 5100s for Tundras is another option that people use with these springs and they have the allen up top but they are valved for leafsprings so many report them not having great handling (plus they are way more than the 54 a pop I payed for the LCs). I tried all sorts of ways to get something on the flats while getting another wrench on the nut, seems like a complete exercise in futility. There's just so little room up there. and I'm already snaking around the axle and panhard and other components to get stuff up there and it's 100% blind.

Alright it bugged me enough I found that I could wrap a strap wrench around the protective housing that covers the shaft and feel much more comfortable that I was able to get at least 14ftlbs on that top nut. Crisis averted, might have been OCD of me but I guess you can't be too OCD when it comes to suspension right?

it's a locknut right? should be fine.
Nope, OEM stuff doesn't have a nylock like a lot of the aftermarket stuff does.

Just finished installing a remote starter on the 100 series. Did it for the misses since it doesn't fit in the garage anymore with the ski box on it. It is also nice that the key fob now works from more than 4 feet away from the truck.

So, my steering gear box was leaking bad. Finding a new is impossible, used and rebuild cheapest $800.00 but also $899.00 or the $1350.00 one, research. An 80 (told was beffier, not) series would bolt on to a 60 after 05/1985. Got one following a dimension check for $309.00 free shiiping, but the $250.00 return added some ( Nope, aint happening, ordered a seal rebuild kit $40.00). Once done will reinstall the 60 one again.
Using mostly HF ( great and cheap stuff) tools to uninstall without any problem, after spraying with Blaster spray a day prior. Actually pretty simple to do using a 31mm, 17mm, 14mm, 12mm sockets and wrenches (21mm to get tire off). A ball joint puller, Jaw puller, hammer, breaker bar, prybar.
Got stumped by a broken dust cover boot that was broken, so I ordered one and hope it fits. Not sure I can get the shaft in once box is mounted ( any suggestions appreciated).
Anywho, the 60 box is significantly beffier than the one I got/ ordered, there is also a few differences. As a slot for the bolt and a ring to remove the 60 compared to the 80 (absent). The fluid was not looking good either another good thing about it all, to get new. Also did my best to clean out the PSC resorvoir.

Qestion, install now and put boot on later or wait? 0488909C-351C-4822-9FA7-325B7A21959E.jpegC6B10CC9-4351-4DEB-9402-98F56E5756B6.jpeg989D2124-E2AF-4DAC-96F0-9EACE26023FC.jpeg989D2124-E2AF-4DAC-96F0-9EACE26023FC.jpegE089CC79-6938-4F67-8DAB-51B2C0AFA5C3.jpegCBAB16BE-66FA-4BED-961E-79B83E4D288B.jpegC7B7CD80-4C16-47C9-A2DC-911F3AEAA89B.jpeg24A623BE-74E5-4FA4-9035-3EF45B5A70F4.jpeg2C277ED9-F4FB-423B-9ED9-9982D4525FF8.jpeg52F0A21C-26C2-48C3-BB73-0233D0F63F0B.jpeg4F40D3C6-905F-484D-9044-193859B68E2F.jpegA3D705B6-0971-45B8-814F-772318898DB5.jpegA9F3036E-E33C-4943-82CE-70566D545AF8.jpeg

If I remember correctly that PSC reservoir has a filter in it. Might be worth checking? Also the rebuild isn’t too bad there are lots of vids on how to do the balls in there and it makes it pretty easy to reassemble. Also I was using power steering fluid not ATF but either is probably fine

Holy Smokes Mike, that is $$$ for the pump!

I did a transmission fluid exchange. I used a total 15 quarts of fluid. The ATF in there was 60k old and looked pretty good, but a few shades darker than the fresh stuff that went in. PO had always documented fluid exchanges too so I felt pretty comfortable swapping all the fluid at once. A short test drive later, upshifting feels the same and downshifts seems to have smoothed out. Despite the 100's transmission always running really cool (even when towing) I am interested to see if this knocks temps down even more.

Updating; holy smokes this stuff shifts nice when its cold!

It’s been a LONG weekend.
Thanks to mother nature allowing me to work in my driveway all day Saturday and make a mess.
Thanks to @Squishy! and @TheHoneyBadger for sponsoring LongCruiser and allowing me to apply the roof coating starting Saturday evening and I actually slept in it overnight so I could apply coats every 2 to 3 hours! If you’re gonna work on your truck, it’s good to have one with a couch and TV in the back.
I settled on a roll-on elastomeric roof coating for RVs. Little smell and no mess. I’m real happy with how it turned out and hope it lasts.

And Saturday also installed a 2.2k starter into my green 80. Rebuilt it first.

Always reading your notes before doing anything. Bought synthetic power steering fluid. Thanks for the heads up to clean the filter. Watched bunch of vids already, reason I bought the rebuild kit.

As always, appreciate your input and expertise.

So removed and ordered new filter, the old one smelled something like burned rubber?

@LongCruiser King of Hammers prep:
  1. Another roof coat. So much rust stained through (Dicor RV Metal Roof elastomeric coating)! :( I hope this doesn't. Otherwise I'm please with the results.
  2. Replaced front passenger window run and lubed mechanism. Now all 4 runs are replaced and all windows operate fast regardless of temperature.
  3. Replaced Cruise Control mechanism with a spare I happened to have. Yay - I have Cruise Control again.
  4. Picked up four new Kenda Klever R/T's in 35x10.5. Sweet!
  5. Test fit a Method Race Wheel #309 simulated bead lock. Predictably the center caps won't fit over the hubs. They stick out too far. Hopefully I'll be able to modify them, but that's down the priority list. Still need to get them mounted and I have to swap all the bolts to black. That's a lot of bolts. Good problem to have.
  6. Removed all remaining old decals. Got to make room for the new livery.
I'll be working on it tonight and all weekend. Near Federal and 285. Text me if you want to hang out. Maybe I can put you to work.

Continue the tire theme....CM trail leader training prep:

Ordered and received the BFG MT KM3 33-10.50x15 due to my 15+ year old BFG AT's are cracked, leaking and generally unsafe (bummer, since they still have over 50% of the tread). Once the mag chloride dries I'll run the truck down to get them installed.

Relocated my Ultragauge from on top of the steering column to taking the place of the useless clock.
