I really took advantage of the weather and got some more work done this weekend. I printed out the paper mockups for the frame reinforcement and was able to confirm fitment of the parts. The lower section took a little back and forth to get the right shape, and I'm still not sure. @White Stripe, did you box in the lower section to meet the bracket or is that just flat plate? As for cutting them out, there's more to come soon with @MonPetiteShoe .

There was still some daylight left so I cleaned up the frame sections with a wire weel and sprayed the overlapping sections with some weldable primer to prevent rust between the overlapping layers. I took the opportunity to get the welder dialed in and practiced welding with the weldable primer on the scrap frame pieces. After getting it to a good setting I tacked the frame back into place before I ran out of time for the weekend. As long as the weather cooperates, I should be able to confirm alignment and get the final placement wrapped up in short order. View attachment 102398
Mine wraps around to the bottom of the frame until it almost touches the lower plate. Their is enough room so the welds between the lower plate and upper plate join together with each other and penetrate the frame at the same time. I then went back and painted the inside of the frame portion that was cooked from welding. Some of the Australian plate kits go a fair bit further than I did bracing the area. But my 80 won't ever be used for hard wheeling so I stopped where I did.

I stumbled on this pic I took of where Robbie burned a weld over what looked like a hairline crack starting. March 2020.

This has become a great thread on fixing the 80 panhard bracket. Now back to your build ..... :)

I have had a lot going on the last couple of weeks but managed to find some time here and there to get some stuff done. Having tacked the frame horns into place I decided it was time to confirm that the core support would bolt in before I welded them in completely. The good news is everything lined up as intended and gave me a little glimpse of what's to come. I still need to paint the core support to match but other than that its going in the right direction. I then beveled the seam so I would get solid penetration and got to welding. Everything worked as intended and the new sections are now in place. I still have some cleaning up to do and need to weld the gussets and inside seams but it's all really coming together.

Do you need airbags?
I actually have airbags. However, the driver side someone painted with color match paint and its peeling. I do need that airbag module we talked about awhile back if you still have that.

I am about to place another order of consumables plus general tune-up stuff for the 80 from Toyota.
I've already purchased from Toyota:
  1. Distributor cap
  2. Distributor O-ring
  3. High pressure power steering hose
  4. Crank seal.
My list is:

Is there anything else that I should do while I am working on these items?
Are Toyota sparkplug wires really worth the $110 vs Denso at $55?

Well, Denso is one of the few suppliers to Toyota, so I would bet they are the same thing.

I just bit the bullet and bought the Toyota wires.

I would completely reseal the motor if it was me. Rear main, head gasket, valve guide seals, etc
This is a good suggestion given all the unknowns. I still haven't driven it more than 1/2 way around the block. I'm going to at least get it back together and put a few miles on it before I dig that deep though. I have also been seriously considering following @J1000 footsteps and converting it EV if and when the engine gets really tired.

This weekend was beautiful, so I took the opportunity to weld in the gussets and clean everything up. That wraps up the welding that was required to repair the accident damage. I also took the opportunity to weld the underside of the steering box in preparation for the steering box reinforcement plates. I am hoping I can get everything wrapped up by April 13th as that will mark 4 months since I won it at auction.

After waiting for some paint to come in I was able to get back to work this weekend. I scuffed, primed, cleaned and painted the core support to match and got it mostly bolted in before I ran out of time. Its feels more complete even with the core support installed!

It's been a busy past month, so I haven't been able to work on the 80 as much as I would like in big chunks. I have made some progress though. I was able to get an airbag module, hood, intake tube, wiper control arms and battery box. The intake tube that was on the truck was brittle and broke into two pieces when I was trying to install the airbox, so I ordered one of those from Rock Auto and installed it in short order. Somehow the connection for the wipers at the cowl had broken so I installed a good used one I found without too much hassle. The hood I was able to get at the salvage yard but is in pretty poor shape, however, it was cheap and will get me through inspection. On another note, I have been patiently waiting for a handful of parts from from Serra Toyota with no avail.

I'm back in the groove of things and finally got the crank bolt torqued to spec. Thanks to @simps80 for loaning me his torque wrench. I used the old chain trick to hold everything in place while I torqued it down. I also received a call from Serra Toyota about my parts which are finally on the way. Since I don't necessarily need what's coming to drive it, I am hoping to get everything together this weekend so I can take it on its official voyage around the block, and maybe a little bit more. The plan is to fill the cooling system with distilled water, as it had green coolant in it when I took everything apart, and fill and drain it until everything runs clear, then fill it up with Toyota red. I'm not worried about sludge because everything was nice and green. Also, after inspecting the Pesky Heater Hose, it was obvious someone had been there very recently as everything looks like new. Thats a relief and ill add it to my to do list the next time I need to flush the coolant system. Today also marks 6 months since I dragged this thing home so I am really determined to finally drive the thing.

Keep it going! You're almost there! I just made a big push to finish my projects for summer, and it's a nice feeling to be driving rather than wrenching!
