Is it a non-US VX-3E or a domestic VX-3R? IOW, does it happen to be one of those grey market ones from Hong Kong? Just asking because the cheapest I've seen VX-3R (US-market one, e.g. the one with the warranty and right default repeater offsets) is the one from HRO.

It is US but used. Was pawned and never picked up. I just got lucky for once. Wasn't even ready to buy but figured what the heck, I sniped and got it.

What's the deal with the Hong Kong ones that are $150 + $50 shipping? are those the grey market ones? I think I'll just go to HRO..

The Hong Kong ones have a couple of issues. One is that Vertex will not honor the US warranty on them, partially or primarily I suspect because they don't carry the FCC approval. The auto repeater offset will not be correct for the USA, so you have to program all of them in, which is tedious if you have to add them by hand in the field. Plus, yeah, $50 to ship them (if they show up).

That's awesome. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut once in a while. Even a broken clock can be right twice a day. :-)

For a primary I would advise against it. It is only .5 or 1.0 watts so the distance is very limited. That is my biggest complaint and the lack of a key pad. During CM I was across from the big tent and could barely understand folks using their HT's in the tent. I would suggest he get a normal size HT and buy a mic, external antenna and a car charger. After that a protective cover, holster or some type of carrying device and an extra charger/batteries.

Just my opinion after having used mine and my full size HT.
