I had my 84 FJ60 rust repaired (minimal) and the entire rig painted by the Rust Doctor for a smidge over $16k. Jason will trailer your rig back and forth from GJ for $500. I'm guessing he could repair your rust for half the quote you got and he could get it done in 2 weeks.

I am working with them as we speak. Shared photos and the build thread with them and honestly would rather support cruiser specific shops whenever possible. 🤞🏼
I'll say this ... Jason has not done any repair work for me, but he periodically buys products from my small Land Cruiser specific side business. He's always great to work with on that end.

@KC Masterpiece can maybe fill you in on his experience with the Rust Doctor in Grand Junction. He’s one of many people I’ve seen have a good experience out there in GJ. Might be worth just talked to Jason Burge who owns the shop, he’s pretty easy to find on FB - or just call their shop.

Completely biased here as I prefer originality: repair what ya got or find another real Toyota tub in better shape and repair that.
I just finished reading every post on that thread and wow...that's what I'm talking about. Love it.

It looks like you mig welded yours. I have a small flux core welder but that will blow right through the panels. I took a welding class at General Air last year and can lay a bead, I even made a horseshoe flower for the yard, but 18ga just seems like a different beast. Perhaps I'm being a chicken about it.

Yes, that is MIG. It will also run flux core if you run out of gas like I did once - LOT of spatter. As far as learning how to not blow through sheet metal, just practice practice practice on practice pieces. My '76 is 16 Ga and your '78 will be 18 Ga, but I welded on my FJ60 and didn't blow through. On sheet metal you don't lay beads, you do spots. Beads would overheat it and warp it and you don't need the strength anyway. Beads are for stuff like armor.

I'm considering it hard. Have you or anyone you know fitted one before? Mud is filled with fitment horror stories.
I haven’t personally. Yet…

I’ve also read some of those same threads however many of them are from the “early” production bodies that they produced. We also don’t know about any frame issues that might have been present.

Or you could call Proffitt’s in Grand Junction and see if they have any 3/4 bodies for sale. I watched a recent episode (last night) where they had 15+ 40 bodies in their yard. Jeremiah was talking about selling extra parts they have and currently looking for an individual to inventory/sell/ship Used Parts. I’m sure they’d still be less expensive than paying someone to fix what you have.

@Nate or stainless steel for $6k? It’s in Durango…this might be the win?!?!?

79 was the first year the fuel tank was external from the cab? Mods would be a new tank, plumbing and seat brackets?

I had a great conversation with Jason at the Rust Doctor yesterday and am pretty encouraged with that option. And the more I think about it, I am guessing fitment issues *should* be much less by using the same body.

I'll finalize when I get back from vacation an update here.

I restored my stock tub a while ago. Eventually rust began to pop up again. I didn't want to do it again so I went with a aqualu 3/4 tub. I started removing my steel tub in March. The aqualu was installed, painted, and back on the road by September. I'm happy with it. Look up chungas revenge on ih8mud. He is finishing a aqualu tub on his 40 now.
