I'm looking at buying a used Lexus and to do a minor off-road build. Never had a Lexus so I'm looking for advice on which model and then is there certain years I should be looking at? Suggestions?

Honestly if I was going to do a mild build, I’d do a gx460. Pretty solid truck, should prove really comfortable on the trail too. In a pinch you get the renter seats, but they fold entirely flat & out of the way for gear too.

Yeah Brian, I think you'd like the GX platforms real well based your past rides.

470 is the 4.7 OG GX
460 is like a compact 200,
550 is the new twin turbo v6 available with truly great off roading features. -Go drive an overtrail+ trim if you have time.

I was thinking on the cheap side. But yeah now that you mention it, if the budget allowed & you weren't concerned about the big uptick in price, I'd put a 550 at the top of my list. They are slick!

No doubt, I'll bet the 460 is one of the better values today in this space.
The 550 is so dreamy though..

LX450 is a fancy 80-series

LX470 is a fancy 100-series

LX570 is a fancy 200-series

GX470 is a fancy 4Runner

GX460 is an even fancier 4Runner.

GX550 is a fancy 250 with a jet engine.
I have never felt so attacked by something so true.

x3 for the GX550. I don't think I've been excited about Toyota/Lexus offerings since 2006... Until the GX550 came out. (Don't get me wrong, Toyota/Lexus have still produced some great models. The GX550's got me fan-girling.)

I was privileged to spend some time in LA in the GX. I drove it through LA traffic and spent some time seeing it's capability offroad. This particular model had a massaging seat. Stop and go traffic with a lumbar massage is something to experience. A massage while in 4-Lo is as close as I'll ever get to nirvana.

The comfort, the capability... It's a pretty sweet package. The new generation ATRAC is nearly silent. It's less like a gattling gun thrashing it's way over an obstacle, and more like a silent butler preparing your morning coffee exactly how you like it. (The coffee in this metaphor is lifting two wheels after articulation reaches it's limits.) The wiz-bang features are impressive. The "360," camera is some tech wizardry. It's nimble, capable, and comfortable. If the price tag isn't a detractor, then I couldn't suggest it more.

That said, I'm finding myself leaning more to the GX family given it's powertrain, capability, aftermarket support, and price point.

I see that Tim from Slee is selling his GX470... I would suspect it's a pretty well sorted out rig, and those bumper prototyes are just dreamy looking. Best color too!

seems like a super fair deal too, just needs a rack upgrade ;) https://www.facebook.com/share/1CmE13FVX5/

I’d probably go with an early GX470. I love the 2UZ.

I appreciate all the info, as of now it looks like down here in Florida the GX460 is a reasonable priced vehicle. But I do have to check out the leads that you have passed on to me, as both vehicles, I probably would not have to do any more modifications. Thanks.
