I drove abe's BJ45 with a 3B this past weekend. Way more torque than a 2F but a little less ballsy on the highway. Turbo would really bring it to life. Driving that 3B ruined me.

Nope. Until you drive a turbocharged 3B you aren't ruined. As Wes said, every diesel should have a turbo.

Not really, just feels that way

Well, it has a LOT more torque at the low RPM range than the 2F. ...which is why it feels so much more torquey than the 2F.

...that said, if you're talking 60 series, you really want a 12HT. Really want. If the truck was 7K, you're in the range of a HJ-61 in OK nick.

Dan, is the 12HT what was stock in the 60 series diesels? How difficult is the swap from 2F?

Right, you pretty much have 180+nm at idle to climbing to 220 and dropping off from there.

I'd agree for a 60 at this alt you want a 6 cyl. The offroad milage of 4 cyl is awesome though. what fdid you get offroad in the 12ht Dan, or so you know since it was mixed?

Key is the 12HT is direct injected and factory turbo. All in the fuel adjustment on the 3B, but typically people open the fuel up when they add a turbo. The beauty of the factory turbos is having the boost compensator on the fuel ratio to lean it out when not under boost. If I was looking at a diesel 60, no doubt I would lean to the 12HT over the 3B. It's one of Toyota's best. Silky smooth, power, torque, and economy.

The diesel 60s came with the 3B (BJ-60), the 2H (HJ-60) and the 12HT (HJ-61). The 12HT is often referred to as the best diesel Toyota ever made for a reason. It's simply incredible in the 60. I have not once driven it and wished it had more power.

(see below)

I got lucky. :thumb:

24-26mpg highway, probably 28 light wheeling. It really sips fuel idling and cruising around at 25-30mph. CM last year we filled it up before doing E-Hill, back to Moab, and we filled it up again in Mancos on the way back to Albuquerque. We only stopped to fuel there because it was time for food. ;)

I'm currently putting a 1HZ-Turbo into my 60. I will be very curious to see how that compares to the 12HT in Dad's 60. They will otherwise be nearly identical (weight wise).

$4,000?!

My 4Runner wouldn't be worth $400 in that shape. Why do you guys like these so much?

It's really about supply and demand. Here's a bone stock unrestored 1980 FJ40 in great condition for $35k. A bone stock 1985 4Runner in great condition would go for a pretty penny, too. Although not THAT pretty. The fact is that there are fewer and fewer decent, running 40s for sale and there will continue to be from here on out.

I've had pickups, 4Runners, 40s, 80s and a 100. The 40 is still my favorite because it has the most soul. :)

10 years ago I brought home a running, driving, later model with a 4spd and disc brakes for less than that. That is insane.

I very much agree. Far too much for a project.

We've got an '85 4-runner. It's not even close to as much "fun" to drive as the 40s are. I have no idea why the 40s are so incredibly much fun to drive, but they are. Not going to ask questions, will just drive them and smile.

(not that the 4-runner doesn't also make me smile, in it's own way)
