I owned a '79 4x4 long bed minitruck for a summer, and was fairly appalled at the ride (worse than an FJ40), oil leaks, lack of power, crummy fuel mileage, etc. I own a '40, so I know about these things, but the allure of early minitrucks still escapes me. I guess if you only drove it offroad to pull logs out of the woods, it would seem perfect for that...

What am I missing here?

Are you kidding?

My 1980 long bed 20R L43 completely rusted with no power steering was the most fun to drive vehicle ever, and I commuted every day for a year with my 2 kids. It's like driving a mix between a go-kart and an imaginary Tonka truck when you were 3.

If you don't understand just drive your Lexus to Starbucks for one of those fluffy drinks and never know what your missing.

Haha! Feeling scrappy today Mike? Pure mini truck glory can't be handled by everyone.

That said yea the 20R wasn't the greatest engine. It was like the 4 cyl 3VZ. *shudder* I still think a '79 is one of the best looking trucks Toyota's ever made and a 22R is easily swapped in and springs are easy to change. Reliability and ride solved.

Yeah - no Lexus. Loathed our '08 Sienna AWD van, too - plasticy, American-spec Toyota that creaked and groaned worse than an old Chevy.

I once drove my '79 mini truck to my barn on my property, without wearing a seat belt. I launched down the steep barn road, and was propelled upward until my head hit the roof. That was an eye opener - stiff ride, you betcha! I think I got 14 mpg on a trip to Denver (all highway). I will give this truck bonus points for toughness and neglect tolerance.

I assumed that you were comparing the FJ40 to the minitruck. My Lexus reference was to illustrate a driving experience that I don't understand and I'm missing out on. I was trying to show that not understanding the joy of a paticuluar experience is our own missing out and so I'm just actually sorry you didn't feel the awesomeness. I cant imagine how a FJ40 could be so much better then the mini.
