The Vin plate is on the drivers side interior of the cowl. Right near the door hinge. I know there is also typically one on the inside fender. The one on the Cowl is what I have always looked for. The only thing that matters is the frame VIN stamp though. That is what you check with the title.

ID plate on the door isn’t a vin plate unfortunately. That will never count. The frame stamp would work if you had to go for a state patrol inspection, but not at just the dmv.

I know you have had more then me. I have owned 3 FJ40's and going over the pictures all I have ever had is the ID Plate. My current one also has a plate on the fender but that is just a small one

When I bought my 2nd 40 with an out of state title, the DMV looked at the one you call ID plate. I have always known that to be the VIN plate, but again that was my assumption as that is all my 40's had

Interesting. You learn something new every day. I don’t remember how the LV was set up, but all my current 40’s are on the firewall. They are 77 & newer though. At the dmv, they’ve always said they can only do a vin inspection on the firewall, and if I have to use the frame, I would have to go to the state patrol in Golden for inspection. I just figured that was true across all years....

Well it’s in great shape. If we needed a big old land cruiser to DD this would be it. I don’t know much about the engine in this thing?

4.7’s are bullet proof when well maintained.

The only thing that kills these are $12 worth of heater ts when they get old and break. $30 min fix. Timing belt takes a few hours and the kit is $350.

And check that all of the spark plugs are tight. It's odd but they do like to back out over 60 to 100k.

Good luck, that's a great deal.
