CARB compliant Cats from Magnaflow.

$750 repair bill gets you 12 months of emissions. There might be a SC'd 1FZ kickin' around here, juss sayin'.

Tire shine was a nice touch. Cloth seats are rad.

Isn't the emissions exemption income based? If I remember correctly, it requires you to prove that you are at or below the threshold. Also, I believe that it allows you the ability to "pass" until the next time the vehicle needs to emissions test. At present, that is 2 years.

*edit*
I think that I was wrong. They are separate exemption paths. It is also only $715 to qualify. Thanks for the heads up and that it good to know. Also, if you are using SNAP or Medicaid or something similar you don't need to spend anything.

"It seems my work here is done."
"...But you didn't do anything."

"Until next time!"

I was pretty close to getting an exemption this last go around. If it failed after all the work with the head swap, that was the path I needed. Show the bill, kick the can down the road for another 2 years. Fortunately, my emissions numbers passed.

Out here in California. 2019 Tacoma Off-Road 6MT. $33,899 and 47k miles.

With the trailer brake controller and the aftermarket mount system on the dash, I wonder how beat this truck is and I wonder how hacked up the wiring is.

Tekonsha offers a plug-and-play harness for Toyotas that have a factory option, so it shouldn't have any wire hacking. Depending on how they put it in the dash I suppose there could be some plastic that got hacked. It doesn't look too bad, though.

That deck on top of the dash is pretty common. It may have required some drilling or screws, I put something similar in my truck that allows a couple of Ram mounts. It's pretty handy so I'd probably leave it as long as it was done cleanly.

Hard to tell with dealership photos of course but the receiver doesn't look like it's missing paint or beat up from draw bars. Nothing jumps to me that would say it's not worth looking at anyway. If anything if they did tow using a brake controller that would tell me they tried to not abuse it. The clutch might be a problem, though.

I'm going to go look at the truck tomorrow. Is there anything in particular I should keep an eye out for?

Nice that it's new and low mileage. New it had 3 years/36k total warranty but I think has 6 years/60k on the drivetrain and corrosion so it's almost as good as buying a certified pre-owned from a Toyota dealer (which would have a 1 year/12k warranty bumper-to-bumper).

Of course look at the modifications. Like I said, seeing them wouldn't worry me but verify. I'm about 80% sure there was a blank slot in the dash from the factory specifically for the brake controller, so I really do think it's dealer installed. The tech deck probably was P.O. installed and if he/she was a goober it could be a hack. But it seems clean.

There's not much I could think you would need to worry about. You know the standard stuff, check fluids, make sure it runs smooth, engage all the t-case ranges, pull back carpets to make sure it's not been in a flood, check the rear locker, etc. The locker on these trucks operates different than you might remember. It's a big electromagnet inside rather than an ugly motor actuator on the side, so it might not be obvious that it even has a locker. It should have a wire harness going into the top of the axle housing that an open diff axle would not.

Being such a low mileage California truck corrosion shouldn't be an issue yet. Frames on Tacomas are prone to rust in a few places. Troublesome hot spots are on the inner frame wall close to the catalytic converters. That'll be one of the first spots to bubble. You can tap it with the round end of a ball peen hammer. It should sound solid and not crunchy or worse, punch through. On this truck rapping it with a knuckle should be sufficient if you're worried.

The frame is fully boxed from roughly under the front doors forward and is double wall C most of the way behind that. You can look down into the boxed section and make sure it's clean of debris and mud. Muck sitting inside speeds up rusting. I doubt it's a serious concern on this one but it's a lot of money and headache to chase a rusty frame.

There is an inspection cover on the bellhousing you can pull to look at the clutch, at least there is on my RA60 and I assume there would be on the RC62 in the 2016+. Aisin fixed the release bearing deficiency that plagued my generation stick shift so there's no fundamental design issues and any defects I'd have thought should be fixed or obvious by now in this one.

Thanks! That sound pretty straight-forward.

The Carfax (maybe this link will work) on this one shows it spent the first year of its life in Jacksonville, Florida. I'm guessing it was a lease truck? Then after that it changed owners via a dealership and moved to the greater Los Angeles area a couple hours inland from the ocean for a year. Then there was another ownership change and it moved north of Los Angeles closer to the ocean but probably still inland for a year and a half. And now it's for sale again at a dealership.

I'd personally like a cleaner chain of ownership. Three owners in 4 years, a jump from Jacksonville and it looks like a 9 month and 15k mile gap? Me? I'd look real close in the frame, behind body panels and under the carpets for evidence of being underwater.

There was a pretty serious storm in Florida June 6-7, 2020.

Do dealers report service to Carfax immediately? It shows it was serviced about ten days after that storm at the dealer.
That is strange there's a 5k gap in mileage. Hmm I wonder if it's worth spending a whole day going up to that dealership and back.

I don't know how Carfax works. What would make me wonder is moving across the country shortly after a storm without evidence of an owner getting a new title or registrations. There's completely innocent reasons for Jacksonville->So Cal, like a Marine or sailor getting a new station. But why would there be a gap in time and miles? Shrug.

Being a sailor could explain why there's an American flag sticker on the TOYOTA lettering on the tailgate.
