I saw this recovery gear on a Heep a while back

IMG_0146.jpeg

Any idea what it is really? Maybe it's intended as a tie down point for transport? In any case it looks manufactured and made to be a 2" receiver adapter for something. I bet it actually does carry a weight rating to do whatever it does. I could easily see a new 4WD owner being confused, it sure looks like a shackle adapter. It's not the worst mistake and might actually be fairly safe up to some point. Maybe it's for UTVs?

I see them on ricers all the time, I think it's intended for light flat towing on pavement.

I guess it could be that. But this thing is made a lot more stout than that and most track cars don't have receiver hitches and ones that do are probably 1.25" size.

Other than the loop itself maybe being pretty small the rest of it is clearly substantial. I wonder if it's something used to move implements or maybe as a hold-down transporting something big, like a tractor.

It kind of looks like to me originally the eye from a 2" wide lifting sling. Those can be pretty strong. A two-ply nylon sling is usually rated for overhead is 6,000 lbs WLL and that will have a 5:1 margin. If that happens to be the original use it's a slight step down from a 3/4" (4.75 ton) bow shackle but would be similar to a 5/8" (3.25 ton).

I dunno. I've seen a lot more sketchy stuff than this. It wouldn't bother me to use it as long as it was on axis. It would be questionable at an angle. You can know how to de-rate a shackle off the center but not so much a sling eye.

Y’all are giving the Heepster too much credit! This is a hoop from a fall protection harness. Our lift operators wear these harnesses when they’re picking orders.

YES! I knew I recognized the shape. Thank you for closing the window on that OCD detail. What a lot of trouble to do that fabrication (which I still think doesn't look bad) and punt on the business end.

I will say that OSHA requires fall arrest anchors and rigging to support 5,000 lbs per person and hardware proof tested to 3,600 lbs, so it's not *that* weak. It's probably no worse than those glorified eye bolts that Subarus and RAV4s have for tow points and is similar to overhead rated single layer 2" nylon slings (3k lbs vertical WLL), although they have a 5:1 design margin instead of the apparent 1.4:1 in fall arresting.

I think i'd trust my kia eyebolt over that.
It's anyone's guess.

FWIW, I've had OEM engineers tell me two different things. One said the eye bolt into a unibody car is 50% of GVW and another said it's safe to 100% GVW. Both said static load only, no dynamic.

I'm not aware of anything published that puts any values to go by for any make. Subaru on our car says they are for towing but does allow that they are supposed to be used to free a car stuck in mud, sand or snow. So they at least recognize it's not just going to be used by a tow truck winch.

YMMV and please be careful.

And now for some Aussie legit recovery and bull bar Super 'Roo stuff...
