I've seen cables run all over them, like aircraft cable nest to fight the sawsall...
I wonder how long Toyota has been putting the vins on them?

Otherwise I guess skid plates or a full slammed low-rider suspension are the best defense for those of us who park outside....

Out here in Monterey whoever is stealing the cats brings a car jack to get low to the ground cars up high enough to cut out the cats. I guess if you're really slammed to the ground then it would be hard for them to get a jack underneath.

I don't have $35K, but that's a beauty!
Thanks Matt. This "for sale" notice in a totally unrelated to a sale thread is the first time I've posted online about the 40 being up for grabs. Been driving him around for a month, or so, with For Sale signs in the back window. Every, and I mean every, time I go out for a drive I get calls and texts asking about the price. When I respond the usual asker says something like "I need to talk to the wife" or some other tell that the price is a bit rich for their blood. Someone who knows the 40 market won't be surprised. Bring A Trailer is the next, and last, place I will be offering Frank the 40 sometime in the not too distant future. After six years of working on him, taking some fun time driving him around is reward for my efforts. As will be the check at the end of the sale. :p

Skid plates orderd. ASFR aluminum should decently cover the 100 cats. Not as sure on the GX but I could not order for me without ordering for her.

Daniel did you already have the front skid in place? Looks like that is required to mount the intermediate skid?

For the ASFR which plate did you order? The transmission and gear box skids look very similar.

I've emailed them about this before. It is a bit confusing how they have them listed.

@Inukshuk or anyone else, I have Asfir skids (not T-case as I modified and put my stock guard on there) if you'd like to look at the coverage this weekend. I think the skids quality wise are "OK" but there is certainly room for improvement. I feel pretty confident that if I took an extra few minutes I could get the cats out, but I'd expect a criminal will move on to the other 10 Toyota SUV's in my neighborhood that don't have skids.

No. Guess we will find out!

Transmission is for Petrol/gas vehicles. "gear box" is for diesel. See the "fittment" key symbols. The two are only slightly different and the "gear box" one will fit a US petrol 100 with slight modification. The reason for teh difference between "transmission" and "gear box" is tha tthey old ASFIR site only had "gear box" plates and "transfer" plates and I asked them what they meant by "gear box" and they looked at me funny. I told them that in the US we call the "gear box" a transmission. Glad to see they made the website change.

Will be watching for a new thread - or a pm - when you fit your plate up. Can I give you a hand installing it? For the meantime, I'm tossing Suzie's Saab to the curb and putting the 100 next to the house!

Wow........that looks like a fire waiting to happen if you happen to drive in tall grass or off-trail....

Good point. Can you imagine all the sticks, grass, and crud that would catch in there after a drive through a field? Ugh.

Couple news articles suggest to spray with bright high temp spraypaint, which could deter thieves because they would have to scrape it all off before being able to sell.

Also to etch your VIN onto the converter so if it shows up at a scrapyard it may trace its way back to you.

Or, we could pressure the current crop of fools running this place into cutting ties with the CARB mafia. When cats cost $80 at O'Reilly like they did before January 1, 2021, theft rates will return to pre-2021 levels.

Sorry to bring politics into this thread, but political decisions caused this problem, and unwinding those decisions is the only real solution.

Why do they have to scrape it off? If it's a performance thing is painting them wise in the first place?

If it's a visual thing why is being painted a deterrent? It's just as plausible a junk yard or exhaust shop would put a stripe on ones they took off cars that needed new ones to pass emissions. So the ones with paint were supposed to go to recycling. If I was a thief I'd probably paint all of them with red paint and tell the cop "Boss just said to clear out all the junk cats from the shop."
