Sears wrenches and screwdrivers were made (by Western Forge under contract) for many years in Colo Springs, and if you see 'WF' on a Craftsman screwdriver or wrench, it means Western Forge. I presume some Sears tools are still made here in Colo Springs, but I noticed that many now say Taiwan, too.
When I last toured our local Sears, they simply don't stock near as much as they used to, but if I'm going to mail order tools, it won't be from Sears. You can no longer get the 54mm socket at Sears, which was where you went on a weekend when you started tearing down your Toyota axle and didn't have the correct socket.
I know professional mechanics who only use Craftsman because the Mac/Snap On stuff is too expensive. I would have to agree, although those companies make some very cool stuff (extra long wrenches, specialty tools, etc.) Too bad that they refuse to sell to the public in any easy way.
I'd hate to be in the tools business, with the number of people wrenching on cars clearly declining. Also, everyone I know has 3 sets of tools - they never wear out. Who is buying the new ones, anyway? ;-)
