Everyone's turned into such haters? I actually like it for what it is. It will never replace my FZJ80 But I'd trade my Subaru Outback for it. Looks great for driving up to the ski resort and hauling my MTB to trailheads. Running around town making sales calls during the week. I hope they put it into production, with a "real mechanical 4 wheel drive system" make it a hybrid and I'll even be more interested.

Lets face it. None of us will really be happy unless Toyota puts the 70 series in front of us in North America.
All maybe true, I just wish Toyota would make regular trucks. Why does everything have to fit some made up marketing segment? The best thing about a simple white 4WD truck was that it's just a blank slate to build and do things with. I wouldn't buy a 70 series, wouldn't meet my needs. I honestly am not that bothered by my Taco. Wish it had crank windows and diesel and didn't have so many rattles. But it gets the job done well enough I guess. I doubt it'll last as long as Imelda did, which is really the thing that disappoints me about Toyota.

What do you mean "lasted as long as Imelda Did?" She's still going strong and on the road every day! :)

I true basic truck in no longer possible due to Federal standards. While power windows are market driven. Stupid crap like backup cameras fall under Federal Safety Standards. Its only a matter of time before the automated braking systems are added to that list.

Dave, how would a 70 series pick up not meet your needs? Other than maybe MPG? It seems to me one of the 4 different 70 series configurations would pretty much meet any of our user groups desires. The wagon or 4-door tray back would make me super happy. Diesel or 5.7gasser.

Then I'd drive this new crossover to work everyday.

My desires are a pickup that has a cab with just a little elbow room. The XtraCab and Access Cab configuration is perfect. They make a ute 70 but it's a work truck with a regular cab. They make a Double Cab 70. Don't need four doors at the expense of bed space. Don't need a full wagon for anything, either. As far as the solid axle, meh. I'm not hard core enough that it makes any difference and IFS has never been a problem for me. It's no secret, the Hilux fits me perfectly. My beefs with the Tacoma are it's been neutered for a domestic use by losing the fully boxed frame, manual t-case and subjective 'simplicity'. It's a good truck and I do like mine, I really can't complain in all honesty. Just a lot of things I don't need. The ideal truck for me is a base level SR 4WD Access Cab and if I had to replace mine now that is what it would be. The only reason I bought my '08 TRD Offroad was the stick shift (my one and main uncompromising criteria) and it did save me a few bucks buying used over a brand new 2015 at the time.
