I have a UVK6 for some reason. -probably USB-C charging for <$30.
I kinda like the Baofeng '5's better but it's probably a toss up, this may have a better battery.

Yep, AC charge dock included and USB-C on the side. Mine made it into the work cars glovebox due to the super simple charging.
They suggest only using the USB-C sparingly to protect battery life so I expect a huge fire at some point :D
Not charging it unattended anyway.

People like these because you can hack the firmware. I have not done so or tried any sideloads.
Mine has had the display invert on xmit, probably rf blasting bits around inside the thing, re-boot fixed that.

alright well in the spirit of more radios I don't really need, I just ordered the 2-pack of the UV5r Mini Baofeng

If nothing else, I just want to remind myself how this OS works so that I can be more helpful on future trail runs.. I'll likely never upgrade the antenna, and likely never try to hack it to send on FRS channels. Or maybe it already does that out of the box, guess we'll see? if nothing else, it'll be one more licensed amateur transmitting on 2 meters, trying to keep it real... :geek:

the tipping point is these are also USB-C chargable... and replacement batteries are also cheap and readily available.

Has anyone tried the ht radios that claim you can talk to the otherside of the world for like $19.99?

Also I received the Baofengs today... pretty impressive. no hack required, just dial up 462.5625 and talk away on FRS1.

These look like great options for @Inukshuk to use with a mag mount antenna on the roof... :bolt:

Nah, they're cute for sitting around camp, taking on a little hike or loaning to someone on occasion but a solid mobile rig really should be the default if you actually want to communicate in a truck. These little things are way too flaky, way too complicated IMO. :)
