A plain old car stereo with buttons and Bluetooth is a $1K?
Well it wasn’t old it was new. We were looking for something that would work in my 3rd gen 4Runner I wanted old school buttons and Bluetooth. I didn’t want a crap head unit that would break in a year so we were looking at the better brands and pretty much anything without a giant screen was 600-1200!!! It was insane.

I dunno what other criteria you'd have but if I had to replace my Alpine I'd probably do something like this Kenwood, model is KDC-BT382U. Has Bluetooth audio, CD player, does MP3/AAC/FLAC/WMA from a thumb drive, can control an iPod, etc. Crutchfield gets $149 for it. It'll even integrate with the steering wheel controls. My Alpine does that but I didn't initially get the interface box until I realized I missed it. All these radios have menus and the displays are like a figgin arcade. But once you set things up the buttons do most everything. It's not really changed that much in 20 years.

Check, that, the model was actually thinking is KDC-BT782HD. Basically the same radio but does HD Radio, so you get the secondary channels and all that. It's $179.

As @DomOfTheDead points Alpine Rulez, Kenwood Drools.

So if you don't need a CD player (and what self respecting technology curmudgeon doesn't?) the Alpine UTE-73BT is pretty close to the no disc version of what I have in my truck. I'm not a super fan of the display brightness, it's hard to balance a color and intensity that works well in both bright daylight and at night. But otherwise I dig it, well worth $119. User interface wise the only trip point is when navigating USB thumbdrives it's not super intuitive and takes a little practice to get into muscle memory so you don't spill your Busch Big Gulp of Mountain Dew finding "More Than A Feeling" in your Best of the 70s folder between shifts in traffic.

oh i know there were other criteria for sure that Andy had but my only criteria was buttons and blue tooth lol he wanted carplay which does require a screen but I still wanted all my buttons, we ended up going with a kenwood or pioneer (idk) that had SOME buttons and the other things he wanted for around $300. All in all its a great headunit but I'd still be happier with an old school button unit lol
