This seems just about perfect match for the criteria: 2010 Outback, 147k miles, $3800. Easy on gas, insurance, safe for a new driver. Looks to have been well cared for, too.
That is a pretty sweet find. Plus it has the advantage of having almost no horsepower so it isn't that fast. That is quite important for a first car. The station wagon, ummm correction, the CUV style will be awesome for taking it camping too.

Indeed. It looks like the 2.5 4-cylinder so about 170 HP. Almost enough to not end up a semi hood ornament not so much as to kill yourself.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
Controversial opinion: get the Prius for all of the previous mentioned reasons but also because it gives off a very specific vibe to parents of potential partners/dates/romantic interests.

I drove a 1998 Ford Taurus from about 2000 (still in high school) to 2012. It gave off the same vibe as a first generation Prius: this young person is a family-oriented, stable, responsible adult who people implicitly trust and who will take care of and respect our daughter. It was OUTSTANDING for my dating life driving that "big stable adult energy" car because everyone's parents immediately relaxed when they found out what I drove. My car screamed "commitment." Rolling up to pick up my date in that car was way better than pulling up in the farm pickup (1996 f250 4x4 short bed) that gave parents the impression I was a degenerate farm kid.

So if you want your kid to have a great dating life, get a well kept Prius. If you want them to have a very hard time with the parents of their romantic interests, get them an older sports car or 4x4 🤣🤣🤣

Geez @DouglasVB, must be a generational thing. When I was a young man suffering through testosterone poisoning I'd have seen a station wagon with a rear space large enough to sleep to have a different meaning with respect to starting a family. About the very last thing on my mind would have been getting a jump start on the soul crushing reality of mortgages and a college 529 plan.

That Taurus was the sedan version so there wasn't any sleeping in the back. I don't think there's enough room in a Prius even with the rear seats folded down, either 🤔

I personally didn't care what I was driving but I found parents responded way better to the Taurus than any of the other vehicles I had at my disposal. Especially when I got into motorcycles... Never pull up on a motorcycle to your date's parents house because you will not be going on a date ever again with their daughter 😅

My first car was an '85 sedan de ville with a v8 and two leather couches to sit on (or whatever else we could come up with). Speeding tickets galore, over stuffing with friends to get to wherever we were going, and a solid 12 mpgs. It was well rated for impacts though!

My HS girlfriend's dad had a selection of guns out that he was cleaning at our first meeting. He later taught me how to shoot well and refine what my gramps taught me. He was the firearms trainer for our sheriff and local police force.

The nicest, cleanest, 1992-1996 2.2L Camry that you can find. There is no other car on the planet as reliable and inexpensive to keep on the road. Oh, and it will keep him from having pre-marital sex…. If that’s a consideration 😃
