All of this just seems like a struggle from Toyota of who can make the most popular of two vehicles: the big, luxury 4-door SUV (LC and LXand the less luxurious, 4-door SUV. I feel like all they recent options boil down to this. You'd think with all this homesteading/self-sufficiency stuff you see nowadays, a simple, solid utilitarian truck would be popular. I'd like to see a SWB 4-door at the minimum or, better yet, a solid 2-door option. Or shit, a new, bare bones 70 pickup for $35k.

But I would like to see something that goes back to Toyotas roots. But they know what we dont, and we are a small market in the US that wants that vehicle. Anywho…

The Toyota of 2023 drawfs the Toyota of 1983. We all know the bare bones 4 cylinders Corollas and Pickups cemented their reputation but the infotainment situation is what moves vehicles now. Toyota dropped the stick shift regular cab Tacoma because it was out sold by Double Cab TRD with every feature 200:1. Even the Access Cab versions I think only hang on because Orkin fleets and stubborn knucklehead hold-outs like me. I think honestly if it wasn't for CAFE Toyota would have bought the 300 here. But reading the tea leaves has got to be incredibly difficult. On one hand the market says it wants truck like the Cruiser but it also says it doesn't want big gas hogs. So which is it? Planners must be pulling their hair out.

Another option, would be to just give the option to order it the way other countries get it. my guess is most countries have emissions or something similar so it would pass in N.America.

Sorry to interrupt your little pipe dream but it's impossible to bring those vehicles to the USA.

New cars sold in the USA have to have a list as long as your arm of safety features and technologies. So a utilitarian, bare bones 2D Prado with cloth seats still needs: traction/stability control, full suite of airbags, TPMS, backup camera, collision avoidance, blind spot monitoring and more.

Coming soon remote shut down of the vehicle and driver inebriation detection are going to be required meaning every car needs a cellular modem and cameras or some other means of monitoring the driver with A.I. assistance.

So like I said it's a pipe dream because the cheap, bare bones 2D needs just as many gadgets and gizmos as an LX600.

Just hang on to your old trucks because once they are gone they are gone.

Well it looks like the new GX 550 is the spawn of the bronco sport and the defender with a lil Fj cruiser...the Prado promise isn't too promising 🤣

Though they'll have a version with center and rear lockers, you won't want to be seen in it jk

Its a Big Montero + LX600,

I love it. They did right, kept solid rear axle, added 100+ TQ, offroad oriented version.

Needs an SR5 version.

I’m sure this will be a 70K vehicle so over 100K all kitted out. Not for the masses and probably most commonly spotted at the country club and soccer games.

Which honestly has probably been the case since the FZJ80 hit our market. It will just be interesting how these newer trucks age with all the tech. Repairs to such will prove expensive I’m sure if the time comes.

Me, I’ll keep wheeling my 80. With the turbo I’ve solved it’s only shortcoming. Still the perfect size for my needs and well I’m not convinced there’s a better over all wheeling platform. Still pretty field serviceable.
