thanks Marco and Kurt
i like this truck a lot and am happy with the outcomes so far.
but i know I am not going to be able to leave it alone..trying to leave it...
but i see that awl_teq rear sill I bought last year sitting there begging to be put in..on the fence about body work..cause while its got a lot of patina..its overall real nice original condition body wise...

the tape..lol..i wish they left the designation writing off of it..but i like that tape the best...

its 3M Temflex tape that meets MSHA Approval; P-142-9-MSHA
It is what we used at Mack and I got used to it/spoiled with it.

Mine Safety and Health Administration code for good electrical tape lol.

I like that tape for long rewrap because its real stretchy and strong..so it makes a real nice strong wrap without bulk.

gm parts

when this gets hot the igniter stops working..
the symptom is it shuts off like you turned the key off, no stumble, just off and wont start.
cause there is no spark.
similar to I think Drews.
been doing it for a while now. I have had these parts for like a year...was going back and forth with it...

when the problem happens, it has to cool all the way off and will function again.

I have been looking for a new toyota igniter
I had the fj60 89620-60020 igniter with electronic pickup dizzy...they are nowhere to be had..and when they were they were several hundred dollars..

so I resorted to gm parts. cheap, plentiful, ugly.
I will work on either a new toyota assembly, or at least a better physical disguise of the gm parts eventually. but after sitting on the side of the road in boulder this morning for 45 minutes again, I decided to make it functional today.

so...
there are 4 leads on the gm ignition module..
b and c
w and g

1. switched 12v (black yellow from ignition) goes to b terminal
also wire from b to positive of the coil.
2. negative terminal on coil to c terminal of module
3. white signal wire from dizzy to w of module
4. red or pink signal from dizzy to g terminal of module.

now, the toyota coil will work with an asditional resistor I understand or a gm coil will work out of the box..

I used an aluminum gm heat sync to mount the module to the coil with the toyota bracket with thermal paste between the module and the heat sync
hopefully it lasts. if not its cheap, and available everywhere.

here are the pns and the ugly ass finished install
d1906 is the module
10474610 is the heat sink
u505 is the coil

Mines DOA again, how's th GM parts working out?

its fixed unequivocally fixed. clearly. no hard start.
drove the crap out of it today, hughway, stop and go.
no failures, improved spark, actually runs cooler, can start it from the passenger seat with 1 bump. very nice.
hate the fix..but pissed at Toyota worse for a million mile vehicle with no parts support.

so..I will keep 2 GM modules 2 GM coils and thermal paste in tbe glove box because Toyota gave up on their roots.

i met a guy at the rally with a 94 80 with a turbo grill cause he could inly buy a turbo grille...
really Toyota...?...
not even collision parts for Christs sake?

pissed off
rant off

midway through, the clunk could no longer be ignored. luckily i had grabbed the ATC tool roll out of the 80, cause I needed 2 14mm wrenches 1 toyota 14mm wrench from the original tool kit  , and 1 from the ATC tool roll to re-attach the front drive shaft that nearly fell off.

it failed, shoulda backed out some timing and turned down the idle mixture, but I just ran it.
this thing runs way too good to pass emissions, I will make it run poorly on Saturday so it will pass

Lol terrifying sight. Maybe give it a go with heet and less timing so you don’t have to take the air filter off to adjust the idle screw?

dont let air caire do anything they dont have to.
the two speed test (idle and 2500rpm) was very difficult for them to get right, mistly because their "system" for determining rpm was wayy off. the guy was revving it for the idle test to get it to register as idle....anyway it failed. I was lazy I should have detuned it the first time, and it probably woulda been fine even with the failed testing method...I asked the guy to use the machine with the sensor on #1 plug wire to determine rpm, he said that was broken so they had to use the "computer version"....geesus...

20191024_183355.jpg

so I backed the timing off to about 7, lean drop adjusted the carb then turned idle up to about 750...the retest at a
place that knows what they are doing passed with flying colors

20191024_183351.jpg

then retuned it back the way it was about 12 deg advanced, then readjusted carb back. all better, runs strong again, here is to not having to do that again...

sooo...
many know what I am up against...had to sell my 65 45lpb last year, up against it again..
I am planning on selling this truck now. If someone from Rising Sun wants it, I would entertain that for sure for a discount. If not I will pay @treerootCO a "sitting fee" for professional pictures :) and put it on bring a trailer.

here are some recent pics (as in tonight :) )

last wrenching on the truck for me..documenting here for continuity for the new guy. Put a brand new oem toyota radiator (yep still available, not cheap 355.00 but still available)
then adjusted the preload screw on the steering box to get rid of the play in the wheel...the thing is pure. I should have done this steering gear adjustment a long time ago, literally the only reason my wife was afraid of driving it. the screw was all the way out, never been adjusted, wuth all the previous work dine, it drives like a new car..

Awesome build! I remember emailing the seller when it was for sale years ago, glad you beat me to it. You did an amazing job with it.

Can you elaborate on the steering box pre-load? I thought they didn't add the adjustment screw until the 60 series? Your box looks just like mine but there's no screw that i see, only the vent/fill hole on the top of the box.

its on the inboard side facing the block, behind tne splash guard thatbia mountes to the box itself, 19mm lock nut and slotted adjustment screw. Not the thing to do unless the rest of the slop sources are fixed, notably the centerlink, but the screw was all the way out here, so a lot of adjustment available...
so just loosen the lock nut, turn the screw 'in' a bit at a time with the wheels straight, checking that you dont induce any 'binding". then tighten the jam nut when done, a but gard to get to, but not difficult at all.
