So ya know alpine tunnel is closed the palisades part was damaged by major slide no plan on when it will re open I call gunnison forest service if ya want to know more but this is what I was told

Found these pictures on the interweb of the palisades slide, and damage. Caused from an avalanche earlier this year. From the reports on the forum, its only open to foot traffic...

Wow, bummer! The skills to rebuild those stone walls that supported the road are pretty rare these days. Wonder if it will ever reopen?

Thanks for the pics! Need to check out for myself. A bummer for sure! Surprised that area has lasted as long as it has.

It is historic so must be rebuilt that way don't expect anytime soon as in be years probably, cool area have opened that road many times for the forest service snow bashing it thru for them

Hi Steve, if I recall, it's not too far from the tunnel to the palisades, so you could probably hike to the tunnel from the washout. trick would be turning the vehicles back around.

Perry or anyone with knowledge of the area, whats the best last stop to gas up before hitting camp?

And are we doing any kind of potluck or is every meal on our own... I am assuming the later.
