This has been discussed many time before and I never could understand why in the FSM the final torque of 48 INCH POUNDS would not get close to the preload tension of 6.4 to 12.6 inch pounds of pull on the fish scale.
Then I reread the manual carefully.....the following is a quote from the manual at the end of the preload discussion..

"If not within specification, adjust it with the adjusting nut after removing the lock washer and lock nut"

By closely following the manual, it took approximately 25-30 FT LBS of torque to achieve the 6.4 to 12.6 inch lbs of tension. Just what Land Cruiser Phil and others have indicated in posts on this subject.

So the manual is actually correct, we just need to read the whole procedure to get to the desired tension numbers.

I always found that the tension got a little bit more once the locking nut was cranked down. So I found myself erring on the light side, then once the second nut was cranked it would be more in spec.

Also remember to take the brake caliper off.. I've done that one too. ;)

Hey those Trail Gear deals look really cool, I like them! I had a star washer back off on me once when the little nibbie that goes in the groove sheared off and let the whole mess back off.

Once of the main things I was taught when I first started is to keep spinning the wheel this way and that while tightening in order to displace the grease completely, otherwise it won't ultimately be tight enough.

Anyone else? any long term experience?

Ton of people running them on MUD with good results. I have a set but yet to install.

And I always error on the side of more preload.
