I think I paid 2k for my h55 new. Agreed on the gear spreads vs the nv 4500

Another point was brought up by Sasha that is very important. No matter what trans/tcase setup you decide on, plan on building your own cross member! The AA “propeller” style is a bad design! If you support the gear boxes at the tcase it has to be mounted at a single point in the middle that allows positive locating at the center axis while allowing independant frame movement. Ignoring this will result in constant leakage(bolts constantly loosening) and/or broken adapter or broken belhousing!!!

With a manual u pick the gear u need to use to climb a hill or bash through snow and stay in it. If u push in the clutch, the wheels will come to a near stop and kill momentum. If you pick the wrong gear u either get stuck or back off and try again in another gear. With a auto u can shift through gears and keep up wheel speed and no momentum is lost. The sm465 is a little rough to shift, but that doesn't necessarily make it so it's slower to shift between gears vs a nv4500 or Toyota manual Trans. I can shift my sm465 pretty fast, but on a sandy hill climb, if I need more wheel speed I don't shift in the middle of the climb, I just peg the rpms and hope the gear I chose to stay in is enough wheel speed. Granny gear in 4hi will get me to 10mph, 1St will get me to 20. Shift to low and cut that in half. A v8 has more rpm than my 2f so u get a little more speed per gear. Woody on mud made a run of plate adapters that were improved over the classic cruisers adapters that used bolts rather than Allens. If you put the word out on mud, a few guys may have one stashed away they might sell. Perhaps some here may have one.

I'd still skip the manual ad go straight to the TH700R4 and build it with a reversed valve body. That way you can slam it into reverse on a technical climb easier/faster.

Its about the same length as the NV4500 but with the shorter length of the SBC over the 2F I''d think you could make it work. Especially if you flip the rear springs. What T-case are you going to run? Is the auto adapter any shorter than manual?

If I can ever afford to rebuild my 40 its getting a LS and 6speed auto. But I'm going to stretch the whole truck at least a foot.

Thanks for all the great comments, and advice everyone has given.
I had to think back as to why I started this build and that ultimately helped pushed my decision. I want to get it back on the road as quick as I can, without breaking the budget. And I feel that sticking with the manual is the way to go at this time. I'm almost positive that this wont be the last time I debate trannys though! haha

In reply to uncle bens post regarding the cross member- I'm looking to reuse bits and pieces of the old AA cross member, while adding in a suport bushing right in the middle. I'll be sure to post pics.
So the setup I'm looking at is the Sm465>plate adapter>3 speed tcase, which will eventually turn into an Orion.
So give me a shout if anyone comes across a Woody made adapter! I'll be sure to post up some wanted ads as well.

Nice set up! 465’s are perfect for a working 40! As long as the aa crosmember only connects to the t-case by a single point that allows rotational movement you are good to go! Lets go wheeling!!!

Woody's old plate adapter was a great design. You may ask Woody himself on mud. Mud is likely the only place you'll find one but don't get your hopes up that was a long time ago. The classic cruisers plate works but u gotta get the Allens real tight and use loctite. If they loosen they will snap.

Is that the only downside to the Classic Cruiser plate?
I found a 465 that I'm going to try to get tomorrow morning. it's an older 10 spline 4wd unit. Would it be easiest to just replace the output shaft with new threaded one? Most likely will do a full rebuild on it since I have it all out.
