Just so everybody knows, I'll be in California before the trip (Redwood Coast) heading East. I've got the map, campsite and route to it from Jensen/US-40 in my phone on Gaia. Hopefully I'll make it this year.

Is there any time for hiking built into this run? One of my passengers would prefer some hiking as opposed to riding all day?

Thanks

That's a good question. Off the top of my head, I can imagine a portion of the group hangs back at Echo Park after the first full day of driving. The rest of the group goes off exploring via truck the next day. I suggest Echo Park or there abouts for hiking because its nice with definite hiking options, plus on the way back the last day we could pick them up easily.

How many miles do you want to hike?

How many people are interested in hiking? @devo's passenger and @MarkEva, anyone else?

I do already plan on several stops where we will hike maybe 1/2 mile at a time. I also plan to run 10-12min/mi pace a few hours at least Friday and Sunday to meet my training plan. Folks are welcome to join me too.

Please let me know and let me think over the topic a little more. I will reply back by no later than end of the week with more possibilities.

That’s encouraging. I would say hikes 4-8 miles would be sufficient.
What time of day will you run?

I have been looking at some GIS apps. The Hiking Project/OnXBackcountry and NPS show the most trails. Mostly short ones. More in CO than UT. I downloaded both states. I like to do about a four mile hike each day, most of the trails are only 1 mile.

Just a "heads up" to everyone....check your route to get up there before you head out. There are quite a few highway closures due to the wildfires!!

I'm coming from the Rifle, CO area and I'm not exactly sure what route to take as CO-13 is closed due to the Lee Fire and that one isn't going away soon.

The COTRIP app is a good source of current info.

Are you guys coming through steamboat on highway 40 ? I'll be looking for you i wish i was going but Devons flying in from England that Friday.

We're planning on coming that way. We'll have the silver 100 -- nothing as cool as your old iron, Dale.

Thanks for letting us know @brisico. Enjoy your time with the friends passing through.

Thanks @devo and everyone for the fire topic. Definitely an important note from multiple standpoints. I updated the first post to make it clearer we are not allowed wood fires, only pressurized gas (aka propane) fires, and obviously we need to be careful all the same to treat the area we'll be in with respect. No cig breaks and tossing the butts in the bushes.

Folks please travel safely. I appreciate everyone looking out for each other.

About hiking more than already planned along the driving route, I will stick with suggesting the Echo Park area from a logistics standpoint so that anyone that wants to remain behind for a day without driving, then we can pick up those folks on the last day when we return towards the fork for Echo Park and Yampa Bench. Please let me know if that makes sense. And to restate, there will be shorter (<2 miles) chunks of foot paths we will have along the driving route on a regular basis. I will be running as I have the opportunity, likely in the afternoons where we make camps if there's enough daylight. I'll let folks know when I go out as a precaution in case I don't return by nightfall.

Now like I alluded previously, for everyone that has expressed IN(terest), I would like to ask for firm commitments so we have a clear roster to expect on the adventure. I have the following tally:

If I missed anyone else, just let me know. It's all good if folks change their mind, I just ask you'll let me know.

Everyone please speak up if you are committed to attending. Like I said, I want us to have a clear roster to expect on the adventure :)
