Anyone here have any experience or know anything this vehicle? My nephew is hunting for a new car and is looking for input beyond the usual consumer reports type info. Thanks.

IIRC, it's what Toyota replaced the CHR with.

If i knew about those, i would've bought one of them instead of kia.
I was thinking the same except for our Forester. Although we really do like our Subaru and didn't really like the RAV4 so it's hard to say we would have made a different decision on a smaller and cheaper Toyota.

The only real complaint I have is the Subaru doesn't have a Toyota engine but in light of the Tundra chaos I'm not sure if that's really a distinction anymore.

I have a Subaru rental while the 80 is getting repaired. What an utter turd pile. Completely unpredictable throttle response. It is either 3hp or 200hp. Lurchy, jerky, pile of mediocrity. It does handle decently though. Coming from an 80 and Tacoma, not sure that is much in the way of a vote of confidence.

I usually have to qualify it by highlighting our Forester is normally aspirated FB25 and 6 speed manual. The CVT "auto" that was the alternative was a no-go. Power is adequate but never blistering. It's exactly like any Japanese 4 cylinder I've had, always just barely enough and you'd throw stuff if you couldn't control it by winding out gears and skipping 6th to 4th and stuff. IOW it *has* be mated to a manual to work.

The RAV4 had an automatic that on our test drive hunted a lot and the interior was nicer but just too over the top for us. About a dozen different finishes and bolsters and cubbies and this and that all over. Even sorta stripped down the RAV4 had this monstrosity of a TV in the middle of the dash that was horrible.

We wanted basic and got basic, base level. No roof rack, no infotainment, nothing extra, key in the column to start, buttons and dials do everything. Steel 16" wheels even. White, of course. Our base Forester has a little screen in the radio that does the FedGov required back up camera and a little LCD under the dash hood for the TPMS and those things. When you're driving normally you wouldn't even really know it has screens at all. It worked for us since we don't do the smart phone thing or sat radio. It still even has a CD player! Cloth seats and made in Japan. Other than the question of headgaskets (which is an understood thing, like HG on a 3.0L V6 Toyota) it ticked every box we had to replace our 2002 Jetta. It's like a time warp backwards.

The best part to me? There's absolutely zero GPS receivers or cell modems in this car. It lacks the Subaru Starlink systems, which didn't become standard I guess until 2018 or 2019. It's got the one back up camera but no lane assist, no adaptive cruise, no other cameras. It's dumber than a car 10 years older than it. The dang thing doesn't even have traction control, just ABS.

Even then, nevermind now, you really couldn't get a no frills car like this. It's a poverty pack, it really is. If you built a Tacoma like this thing it would be a Hilux SR.

subie's were out for me because everyone i've talked to who owns one said mileage wasn't great. i had four priorities (in the future it will be 5, i've learned to love heated seats).
1 - i didn't want a car loan
2 - awd
3 - good gas mileage
4 - remote start

the kia fit it all, but i've learned to hate a lot of little stuff, wipers smear, rear wiper wipes half the window, don't know wth they figure they're miles per gallon, but they're consistantly 2.5-3.5 off by my math..i have a whole spreadsheet showing the consistency of kia saying i'm getting far better mileage than reality, horrendous service from the local dealer service dept, that's off the top of my head. i'm sure there's more.

with a 30+ mile commute and often doing it twice a day, i needed something i can rack the miles up and save my (pre-crappy quality apparently) tundra with it's low miles.

Milage on this thing according to the computer is sitting right around 23mpg, which also is not worth the mediocrity. IMO

The last few tanks in our Forester have been:

Miles/Gallons=MPG
241/8.12 = 29.68
195/8.06 = 24.19
119/4.86 = 24.49
139/4.84 = 28.72
167/5.21 = 32.05
272/9.67 = 28.13

It's burned about one quart (36 ounces to be precise) of oil in 5,000 miles. Which has been typical for us. It's got 50k on the engine now, all but around 10 we put on it.

here's the kia...not even consistent in how off it is. i bought it last year with 14 miles...i'm now drawing closer to 33k. it replaced a crappy old chevy cobalt that consistently (according to the math) got 32-33 miles per gallon. in the last two columns...first is what they say i got, second is what the math says.

So otherwise it not being a Toyota, the Kia is working for you for your basic running around?

I'd check into what insurance would be on the KIA vs the Corolla Cross. My experience has been that Hyundai/Kia vehicles are okay for the first 100ish K miles. It took me a while to get my wife into a Toyota, but she loves them now.

it is, but the little things annoy me. i hope it ends up being reliable enough that i don't have to use their "10 year warranty", but a friends daughter in law already is having problems on her 2022 and a coworker had to have her engine replaced after three years. and again, our local dealers service shop sucks giant donkey weenie
