I'm in the middle of an engine rebuild on a 1fz, using a spare motor, so if you need any parts for trouble shooting/replacement let me know.

Congrats on the truck!

Looks like your off to a great start. While your doing maintenance you may want to waterproof all the electrical plugs with appropriate grease to keep water out. They loose their water resistance over time. I blasted off my last 1fz on my prior 80 at the car wash before doing that and got all kinds of issues from it.

That's a good thought White Stripe. Check the e-locker wiring for corrosion and grease the plugs, and maybe extend the little breather hose on that unit as well to keep water out of the locker assembly.

Yea - including the e-locker

New plug wires cap and rotor. Also new valve cover gasket (leaking), redid the Cam plugs (couldn’t stand the red RTV on the plus they were leaking), and new spark plug tube seals. Did the plugs a day ago. Looked nice under the valve cover... didn’t check valves since I wasn’t going to do anything about them anyways. :/

#6 plug had more crusties than the others.. its at the top.
My observation with my own Land Cruisers is that after the major gas companies went to the "Top Tier" paradigm for gasoline (they add a lot more detergent than they used to), not only do we not need any BG44 type additives in our fuel, our spark plugs (and intake valves) are going to last at least an order of magnitude longer than they used to.

New Name for the rig. First time we've ever named one "Greg". a tribute to the previous owner as well as our pet fish tank. It has some significance in our family. :)

Greg is still waiting on some parts... heater control valve mainly. hopefully in by Wednesday. Heading out to Utah Saturday morning!

Well.... while still waiting on parts to finish the cooling system PM I did some other PM.

We hit another snag.

Chasing the bearing noise I heard when I drove it home I tore into the front knuckles a little bit. The right front wheel bearing was real loose. Like the bearing nuts spun off by hand, both of them as an assembly. The wheel was rocking back and forth a good 1/4". I'm guessing the bearings spun on the little stub axle a little bit but it didn't look bad. That right hub flange had red RTV on it and was also loose so I guess somebody was in there at some point.. The left had the normal gasket and the bearings and hub flange nuts were actually set right. Anyhow, of course I took both of the calipers off to remove the hub to look at the bearings (which were... ummmm serviceable after some re-greasing) and noticed the caliper bolts were hand tight on both right and left sides. Oh well, found another issue right?

Well....

I went to torque everything back up and the right side caliper bolts torqued up nicely. BUT the left side top bolt just spun and spun... The threads in the knuckle are stripped. Bugger. I didn't put any torque on the bolt so I am guessing they were stripped before. The lower bolt torqued up fine, it's just the top bolt.

It was greasy, I only took a few pictures that don't show much.

Kinda bummed. but it's how it goes right? And heck at least I found a few issues that would have bitten me later in Moab i'm sure. I still need a CB too. Anybody got a hand held I could borrow for the event? I was planning on installing one but this week already feels short. Now I want to check the rear bearings and brakes. The whole brake system needs a good bleed too... it's like muddy water in the reservoir and the brakes were real spongy and vague. Was kinda tempted to change the gear oil in it all but now I'm thinking leave it if I do get there. Yes, I know, the knuckle studs. They are loose, still need to torque them after I figure out of the axle has to come apart..

That sucks man. You're looking at it the right way though. It's so much better to find issues at your house than in the field. Hopefully it all comes together so you can break her in proper!

Def' purge the nasty brake fluid. It easy and nice to have solid brakes in Moab.

I have a cb for you but it not a handheld.

Yeah the brake fluid is getting changed!

Helicoil kit ordered. In past experiences they have worked well for this type of application. I feel pretty good about doing a thread insert. Couldn't find a timesert kit which I'd prefer but you gotta play with the cards you are dealt. I am assuming I can get in there with a drill bit.....

I'll swing by and grab the CB. Thanks Bruce.

I have a used spindle you can have... it's got a little step in it from a loose bearing but maybe not as bad as the one in front of you- it would easily run to Moab & back.

And I forget how much room is on that side of the knuckle but you may be able to zap a nut onto the other side? Then get a longer caliper bolt... I mean shear is shear right? You already know the 2nd bolt is just cosmetic anyway, it's been stopping fine on 1.

Not that it helps, I have a right angle drill that would work well for getting in behind the spindle. I also have a CB you're welcome to borrow.

The spindle seems good to use, it's not real bad, just signs of some spinning. I'm gonna run it.

I am on the re-thread route, it will be good. This front axle work is a stop gap until i can do a proper rebuild.

Dave, thanks for the offer, if it falls apart in Grand junction on the way I'll take you up on it lol.
