Or track down the owner who has the title in their name and get them to sign the power of attorney to you to get the duplicate. I think that's what I did with the 66 i had

It's all a pita but I would try not to get a salvaged title and taint that baby

but this is what the DMV said needed to be done. I'm confused, frustrated and running out of options here. Why is the salvage title an issue? The goal is to get a title for it right? and how much does a power of attorney cost?

I found the original owner's address so I guess I will go stop by

I found this: http://www.gunnisoncounty.org/clerk_pdf/2175.pdf Is this what the original owner has to sign?

Salvage title will cut the value below half!

IMO the 100% right way would be to find the original owner, have them sign over the title to your ex, fill out and sign a bill of sale, etc. Then your ex would register the vehicle in his name, get a new title, and then sign that over to you with a bill of sale etc. and then when you got the new title in your name you would repeat the process with Timm :hill:

The quick way would be to find the original owner and have him sign over the title along with a bill of sale as if Timm were buying it from him directly...That would save a lot of steps and you can consider your ex and yourself as just people that stored the vehicle for the original owner all these years :D

But would this work if there were other owner's who had a title between the original owner and now? I understood that there were other owners after the original, who had a title. The way I understand it, we need to have the last known owner who had a title sign it over. Right??

I found where the original owner lives so I was just gonna go visit him. Timm wanna go with me? It might be easier that way.

Would love to go, but want to make sure we got to the right person!

we got the right one! My ex bf told me his name and the old registrations I found in the glove compartment confirm that. Ex says he never registered it and didn't intend to register it until it was restored (no point in paying
reg. fees and taxes every year on an inoperable project). He was given
his paperwork including bill of sale. He says he gave the bill of sale to me, but if he did, I can't find it. I have everything else associated with the rig, but not that.

Ige was right...this is hell! But I'm not giving up! :)

Correct...I didn't mean to confuse the issue. I thought I remembered from back when that the original owner was the only owner until the 40 started getting "handed down". I should have stated you need to find the last owner whose name is on the title :) - as far as the state is concerned, that person still owns the 40 and hasn't registered it for years...It will be interesting to see if you get hit with the Ritter fee after it is all said and done...

The way I uderstand it, the fee is only for the old owner..."my" date starts with the date on the Bill of Sale.....but I guess it depends on how they transfer the title...

either the POA or just saying the title was lost:

http://www.dmv.org/co-colorado/replacing-a-lost-title.php

If your title has been lost, stolen or damaged, you can get a duplicate title by going to your nearest county office. Make sure to bring the following materials:

If your vehicle was purchased on or after July 1, 2006 you must provide appropriate identification.

VIN number and title number.

Payment of $8.20 for the duplicate title.

 you can't get a duplicate title if it's not in your name. you need the power of attorney or the person whom's name is on the title.

so I called DMV and I gotta get a TITLE OR SALVAGE TITLE ESTABLISHED BY SURETY BOND.

http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellit...goBlobs&blobwhere=1251600297241&ssbinary=true

I don't see how this means you will be issued a Salvage Title unless of course it is in deed a salvage vehicle. It says "title OR salvage title" meaning either can be issued depending on the research findings.

If anyone wants to PM me specific questions go ahead. As a previous auto dealer employee I know more than the average Joe but don't really want to openly post some of my opinions on this subject.

This is correct. If you could get a POA on the PO you could then have a dup title printed (only if one has not already be issued. The DMV will only issue one dup per title). Then with the dup title and POA you can essentially sell it to yourself and sign the PO name as POA. Make sense?

Title work sucks, it was one of my least favorite jobs.

I don't really care what process we need, as long as it's the one that will get the FJ40 with Timm and I think that's going to mean going to the last registered owner and having him sign over the vehicle to the new owner, which will be Timm. That's how I've come to understand this, but this is all new to me.
