I am running the Moab 240 again this year and am looking for a good campsite for my crew to use along US 191 between Moab and Monticello. We have rented a 21' Sprinter that is RWD, so options are somewhat limited by the vehicle selection. Last year they got stuck once in a sandy wash, but I left a set of maxtrax in the vehicle and that got them right now. I figure this group may have some thoughts on secret spots or opinions on the established campgrounds.

The map below shows the section of the course we are looking for a spot on, full course is available here for caltopo users. https://caltopo.com/m/1PU1

Whistlewind looks like a good option along the route very close to The Needles aid station.

Also looking for a spot close to Indian Creek for them to post up at for a nights rest. Superbowl and Hamburger rock look like options?

For both spots we would plan to go out a day prior, pay the use fee, and drop a backpacking tent to reserve the spot. Nothing in either area is available for advance reservation.

I appreciate any suggestions!

So right near that green X are two spots I'd suggest.

One is to the north, it's literally above newspaper rock... but dispersed free camping, a little scratchy with the trees but you could get a sprinter up there. Probably 5 minutes from the paved road into Canyonlands... aim for 38.00399, -109.4976 there's a bunch of spots up there. Can be windy, but the views are awesome and it's easy to get to.

Second would be across the street, up Little Indian Creek. I haven't explored this one (yet) but it seems like there would be lots of spots there. Aim for 37.98513, -109.51514 then go south, check out all the spurs, etc.

I’ve camped at windwistle. The group site is very large and has lots of flat ground for tents. It’s not ideal for RV or RTT. From memory we had 4 trucks and a small trailer parked in the group site parking area. It’s a walk in style. Rest of the campground is standard style sites. Vault toilets. I don’t recall any water. We brought our own.

My buddy used to camp around hamburger rock when they would go to Moab. They had a 2wheel drive early 90s conversion van that they would take up there. I have never seen the spot they camped at but they got that van up there every year. I asked him about getting a sprinter up there and he said "No problem at all. There’s an actual campground there and dispersed sites all along the road that should be fine…to get back further you’d obviously need 4x".
