I have cleaned the tank three times now...

Somehow, there is still crap in there!

Mike, if you decide to go the re-lining route, I have had good luck with the POR15 tank re-lining "kit". it comes with several components, acid, metal prep, and the liner. I never used it on a 40, but it worked great on some motorcycle tanks I had.

The POR15 stuff works great from experience, but I have also used Red-Kote with good results.... and its available over the counter at O'Reillys.

Use a metal wash on the inside of the tank, then acid metal prep. Be sure to keep the coating from pooling anywhere. If it's thick it wont dry and it will flake off after awhile.

The tank is very clean when you look into the fuel level sender hole. I even put the pressure washer into the fuel pickup and flushed all the water out the bottom of the tank. I think the issue is that there are two baffles in a 1964 tank and the pickup is behind it. Even though there is a depression that holds about a gallon of fuel, the pickup isn't able to use any of that fuel. The dirt is mostly sand that must be trapped behind that baffle. The lines are clear as well. I used compressed air to flush the lines and then let the water flush them out. I have a small length of weed wacker line in the glovebox that I use to clear the fuel line when it plugs up.

This is a pic I took just before the last acetone treatment. All the green and yellow stuff is gone now and the metal is bright and shiny.

I thought the early tanks were galvanized? If so, all that crap in the bowl is probably the galvanizing chipping off.

We only snapped off six of the bolts so I'd say it went better than usual :) Used the new taps to rethread them and replaced the hardware with new.

That old one doesn't look too bad. Did they weld to it, or just drill a hole through it? I've never actually had a 40 that still had one of those. Did they all have them or just an option?

I'll probably fix the old one at some point. They drilled a hole through it and smashed a few of the ribs. As far as I can tell, all the factory hard tops came with the step.
