I have been trying to get a Birf to release from the axle shaft an a 1994 FZJ 80 short side axle shaft using the plastic pipe method with no result. Long side popped off with one try. I've even broken one piece of plastic pipe I've dropped it so hard. It's just damaging the plastic pipe where it meets the cage on the Birf without causing it to release. Any suggestions or alternative methods for removal?

Short side is always harder as the smaller shaft is lighter. I use steel tubing not PVC personally. Maybe spray some penetrating oil in there as well?

It’s not stuck. Just more brute force needed. GL

I struggled significantly with my short side as well.
You could try hanging weight off of it to help pop it out as you slam it in the pipe.

Steel works every time. Plastic absorbs too much of the force.

Finally found a piece of 1 1/2" steel pipe at the scrap yard in Penrose. (Disadvantage of small towns.) It was actually a 36" long nipple with the plastic protective end caps still on it!. $6. 3 days soaking in penetrating oil and 3 wacks later, it's separated! Now I have the special tool for the other upcoming 3-4 front axle rebuilds I have pending. LOL.
