Not me, but a buddy took his 80 in for an o2 sensor and a few minor things, and they gave him a quote on things that they say should be done.

I completely respect mechanics/techs that run their own shop and need to make a living yet, I've been stung buy some shops that quote a job and run into unforeseen problems and a $700 half shaft job turns into a $3000 front diff job.

Just like a couple weeks ago I was quoted $3000 for A/C on a 1995 Chevy truck and I did a complete rebuild with parts, A/C gas and tools for $565.00. I have no clue how they're billing these things out at.

That's like $15K worth of service that should be like $4K for all of it :)

I think going rate in the metro is close to 2 to 3 hundred an hour. When i still had my little Toyota matrix, I was trying to figure out where this droning noise was coming from in the rear end. Come to find out it was the viscous coupler bearing. A local Toyota shop quoted me over 5k. The rear differential was 2600 and the rest was labor. Said it was a 12 hour job. Do the math. Pretty simple.

I read an article showing that the mechanic field is losing more people than are coming into it. That tells me that this is becoming a supply vs. demand issue. If mechanic shops can't keep up with the work they have, they will quote super high in order to justify taking on more work, especially a nasty job like birf slop.

The trades are dying. Kids are programmed that they need to get a 4-year degree min. Or they just think they’ll make millions on OnlyFans I guess 🤷‍♂️

Anyone in Highschool now should be considering the trades with some training in business management. You’ll do well. All my builder clients tell me their subs all make good money.

It’s all of them now. Had a guy tell me yesterday that previous sprinkler work quote at180/hr plus parts was cheap. Diesel mechanic was $260/hr or some such nonsense. New roof $80k. Literally all goods and services doubled in the last 5-6 yrs. The good thing about 2008 was that I was able to get house projects done at reasonable rates in 2010-2012. No such reset in sight yet for 2026

True.

I think I’ve told this story before but, here it is again.

My local mountain electrician drove an old Toyota 4wd truck and did jobs up here along peak to peak and lived in an off grid cabin. Super nice guy in his 50’s. Anyway, he was installing my generator switch maybe 10 years ago and we got to talking and my job was his last job and he was moving. I’m like cool and sad at the same time. Anyway, as we talked it turned out he made a cash killing installing MJ grow light/power systems during the Medical MJ years.
All cash payments resulting in him making enough to pay cash for a Hawaii beach front house. Sold his mountain place and moved.

All because he knew the difference between a white and black wire.

Food for thought.

I work as a mechanic. That estimate is ridiculous and nobody should support that shop if it's real. I could do a regear and both axles and diff rebuild and even throw in a transfer case rebuild for under 8k. It's not rocket science.

However, with what idiots are willing to spend on their collection of vehicles it becomes reasonable again. Seems a lot of people bought incredibly high priced classic vehicles and, no offense, don't want to or don't know how to work on them. As long as owners keep asking for and paying for services the price will climb. I know we all gotta make money but we've started to be okay with people getting greedy then celebrating based on how much money they extract from customers.

Has Rising Sun considered setting up an Only Cruisers account? And when we want to be extra spicy, mini trucks and Tacomas/Tundras/Sequoias can be included, too.

We've just gotta take photos under the hoods of our trucks and of the undercarriages. I'm sure there's a market!

Could bring in a lot of money for that new clubhouse...
