4runner bumper options?

Hey y'all,

I'm finally, after 10 years of wheeling, going to replace my factory plastic with something sturdier and maybe throw a winch on it. Are there any Colorado companies that make bumpers that you would recommend? And if not, who is your favorite? I'm still in my 08 Runner V8.

Danke!

I have been very happy with the Coastal offroad that I put on my 60. They are a DIY product so you would need to weld it out and then finish with a top coat of some kind. They are based out of BC Canada.

I've been seriously considering them. My only concern is, if they handle a winch pull well or not. I guess that mostly depends on my welds I suppose.

My bumper is cut from 3/16" steel and the recovery points are tied directly to the frame. The recovery points consist of 3 pieces of 3/16" sandwiched and welded together. A single piece of 3/16" has a tensile strength of a minimum of 36,000 PSI. Weak point will definitely be at the welds.

Follow through the calc.

Tensile strength is force over cross section.

You're assuming A36 steel so then, yes, minimum yield is 36 ksi.

To use this you need to know area. A 3/16" thick bar that is perhaps 2" wide would then be 0.1875" x 2" = 0.375 square inches cross section.

So in tension this example will have a material yield of 0.1875 sq-in x 36,000 lbf/sq-in = 13,500 lbf.

This doesn't mean that this hypothetical recovery point strength is 13,500 lbf. That is going to depend on fasteners, how many and how big are the holes for bolts and shackles, how well the force is spread, etc. Just gives you a material starting point. In this hypothetical the 2" wide bar I picked from thin air is probably not a good choice, with a 3/4" hole in the middle it's going to be suspect.
Weak point will definitely be at the welds.
The wire we're mostly using is ER70S-6, which is 58ksi yield, 70ksi ultimate minimum. It's as-welded strength is going to depend on the shielding gas but if you're using 75/25 it's typically able to achieve about 65 ksi yield and 85 ksi ultimate.

The filler is significantly stronger than the base metal if you're using A36.

That said you are fine to assume the weld is the weak point for lots of reasons. Workmanship, heat affected zone, geometry, contamination. But that isn't necessarily so based on material or process.

Completely agree still, *definitely* prefer to see recovery points that pass through and do not rely on welds. There are fewer unknowns when you see a hunk of continuous steel bolted to the frame.

I have a Victory 4x4 bumper that I was just about to post for sale.
It's for an 06-09 and it does not have the tube. I bought it for 500 and I'm just looking to break even. I was going to put it on my 04, but the bumper lines are very different so I'm looking for something else.
Let me know if you are interested.

@MATPHAT - The Coastal is a great option. I had one of my GX and it was solid with a winch. Also, check out Bay Area Metal Fab - one of the best looking tube bumpers out there. I'm in Erie with a full MIG setup if you'd like someone to assist.
I've been considering the coastal as well, but though I can weld a little I wouldn't trust my bumper to my level of skill. That's a kind offer and I'll keep you in mind.

I had been considering a center cut away and was not sure how well they winched. What are your thoughts on it? Actually, I may just post the question to the forum. Kind offer and I'll consider it if you still have it.

I never mounted it so I cannot say how it performed. The comments on the other TR4 forums seem to be positive. My plan was to remove the grill/mesh screen on the winch bumper for more winch access.
You are welcome to come check it out and see if it is something that will work.

Colorado company. I don’t know anything about them.

I’ve seen the addicted offroad bumpers. Scotty does great work. His are strong and solid.

C.G, Are you saying that the Lil B and Addicted bumper guy is the same guy?

Sorry for the confusion. No they are not.

I do know Scotty at addicted.
His bumpers are good and strong. A friend of mine had one and it took a hard hit, unfortunately the truck was totaled. I would recommend his.
