What do you carry with you on the trail that you would recommend that everyone bring? There's an old wheeling checklist thread from 2006 that is interesting but definitely FJ40-centric. @Corbet recommended packing replacement valve stems, and I have added these to my supplies. I'm now also carrying an emergency clamp for exhaust failures with a tube of goo to seal up the leaks, thanks to @CardinalFJ60.

I used to carry a spare 80 rear drive shaft, but it's heavy and takes up significant space, so now I keep it on the shelf at home.

Interested to see your suggestions.

These are the stems I carry. https://colby-valve.myshopify.com/collections/colby-valves/products/colby-valve-emergency-2-pack
I carry a spare rear DS. It's the one thing I fear damaging on the trail.
Fusible link (80 series)
Fuel Pump relay (80 series)
Drive Flange and Steering arm studs
Drive Shaft bolts
I want to add these to my kit: https://absolute-wits-end.com/emergency-brake-line-plug-m10-x-1-0/

Beyond this I don't carry much other than tools and the standard array of fuses, duct tape and baling wire.

Spare birf, and both front axle shafts. Rear axle shafts. A couple heim joints. Rear drive shaft. Arb plug kit (also has a couple valve stems). Tools. Few extra fluids.

Probably edit more as I think of things.

What officially counts as baling wire for our purposes?

Ss or galv?
What gauge?

After more thought, this thread is pretty meaningless. Matt no longer really wheels his truck. The last time he had an issue he nearly gave up and just got a Camry. So he should just carry his title.
Yeah but he wheel's the shit out of his Sienna!

I'd like to also add some detail around tool selection as I don't think you need to bring the entire tool box.

(This is from memory so don't crucify me if I get some things wrong)

I'll edit this as I think of more things:
Socket/wrench sizes:
10 - bring at least a dozen of them because, well, you know
12 - hub flange nuts and a bunch of other things
14 - drive shaft bolts/nuts
17 - caliper bolts /TRE nuts (or are the smaller ones 18?)
19 - TRE nuts
21 - lug nuts
22 - 100 series lug nuts
24 (27?) - front and rear suspension links
54 - hub nut

There are other sizes needed for other things but the list above should get you home.

Pliers:
snap ring
needle nose
diagonal cutters
vice grip
slide lock

Hammer stuff:
dead blow
ball ping
brass drifts
steel drifts

Misc:
phillips/flat head screw drivers, allen key set, a few picks, two jaw puller ( OTC 7503 )

Whatever is strong enough to wrap around a broken steering arm or similar. Just to get you home or a repair place for a proper fix.

Yeah I like the regular actual bailing wire that's kind of still ductile and you can twist and wrap with your bare hands easily. it's pretty weak but if you need strength you can do lots of wraps. Bailing wire and a outer wrap of duct tape got a front leaf on the 60 together enough to tow Yoder's 4runner home from the flat tops along I-70.

Bailing wire got @Boss Hog 60 to camp when his TRE snapped on the Cruiserfest run.

I carry spare u joints as they are less cumbersome that a whole driveshaft. I usually have my ball joint press with me to make quick work of universals

Spare bolts of a sorts of sizes
Assortment of fuses
Gorilla tape
Hose clamps

I carry all of the hub sockets and axle related service tools I own as not everyone drives yota and Dana axles are common on the trail
