With the cold weather this week I'm getting the itch. Have a 2nd season bull tag. Until then I'll be turkey and grouse hunting with the boy. He has a license for the first time

That’s some tough terrain right there! I love grouse hunting. My buddy has three really good dogs, and will travel anywhere if you know of good bird areas!

I picked Up a 1st season Either Sex in Unit 3/4 (north of Craig). I also have a third season cow tag in the flattops. Not sure if I will go third season if I fill my first season tag?

Good luck hunting with your son Corbet. That sounds fun.

I just got back from 9 days in the Flat Tops wilderness. We stuck it out to the very end. Either sex muzzle. Can't get em ever year. Darn it! My friend shot a cow. That was it of the 3 of us. Not as many elk up high where we were and they were not calling. So that made it very tough. Also had more bowhunting pressure this year. Odd year for elk. The deer were also extremely skittish. Elk were not talking and not moving around much in the areas we have learned about over the years. I headed out of camp at 545am most every morning up the mountain to the same game trail I have shot several and didn't have a single elk come thru. I figured I eventually would but didn't. Managing frustration became a big part of the weeks hunt.

Lot's of grouse. We shoot them with sling shots. Doable but not easy. Also saw lots of pine martens this year. Which are pretty cool to watch chasing chipmunks. But, they gave us problems in camp getting into elk meat and stealing our fish and grouse. Sneaky bastards. Sitting around camp at dark looking at camp stoves instead of a fire kinda sucked also. Still had a good time in the woods giving it a go. Good luck out there.camp021.jpg

Got skunked on blue grouse in both Vail and Aspen, but finally got into them up on the WY line, near Walden.

Saw a few cows too far off first season. Youth can roll over their tags and we each had doe tags for 2nd. Able to score my son wyatt his first elk and he just turned 12. He made one shot 154 yds out with his tikka 7-08 that he hand loaded a nosler accubond. Fun day just he and I!

Thats awesome Wes! Congrats to you guys and especially him, I bet he was stoked.

We just got back from a difficult hunt that we have nothing to show for. I guess ya can't win 'em all. We sure as heck tried though.

Wyatt was able to fill his doe tag too. He missed a few. They are a much smaller target than elk :p. I’m done guiding this year :)
