He told me technically he's supposed to stop and send me to a body shop. But agreed to just slather on the primer and glue and put a new window on. I guess to really do this right I should have him come pull it in my garage, then return in a week after I have cleaned it up a little better. Not that I'd likely cut out and weld, but I could see at least wire wheeling it then skimming it with bondo. Is the much better than what I have though?

Here are my screws

Sure is clean though. And substantially less cracked! Total bill $283.42.

Thanks Tim! This is on my list of things to fix this spring as well. I have 2 cracks now. several noticeable rock chips. I too expect mine to look like this underneath as well.

now my windshield squeaks. Is that normal? I don't get many new windshields... this is annoying.

Not normal. Should not make any sound. Would have probably also insisted he use rivets and not screws. I understand someone did it incorrectly prior and used screws but not sure why that means he had to do it incorrectly again. If the holes were drilled out you just use a slightly bigger rivet, this was done on my old 100. Your also missing the plastic strips that go into the channel to cover up the rivet or in this case screw heads.

I don't think the side trims will sit flush over the screw heads, I think that's why mine were loose an one blew away.

Those strips that cover the screw heads are in there, that pic was just before they were reinstalled. But those side channels aren't holding the window down, they are really just cosmetic, in my case they are holding my wire loom in place.. bigger rivets would be just as tight as the screws, the squeaks are all around the perimeter of the window. This was squeaking on my way home, 3 hours after install-

does it squeak at all speeds? If everything on the sides is tight, maybe check the cowl cover, might be loose and rubbing somewhere.

I drove to lunch and no squeaks at all.. maybe the seals heated up a little bit and expanded? But yes, it would squeak this morning even going over a crack in the sidewalk. Hoping things just settle in... realizing I may not have the best seal in the world.

Just made an appointment to have Rusty replace mine as well, it was destroyed in the hail storm.

New glass

I guess I'm next!

ABRA Window guy showed up today to replace the broken one and before he even unloaded the truck, he checked my shield for rivets. He then proceeded to call the shop and hassle them that they didn't give him the correct rivets. That's Score #1.

While he's waiting on the phone, I ask to see the glass, so he pulls it out and puts it on the stand and then starts to inspect it. Long story short, he cancels the appointment because he feels there's too much distortion in the glass and he wants to try another brand before going to factory glass.
Score #2.

While we're setting up a new appointment, he starts chatting about what he likes to do to make sure it doesn't whistle...says he's been doing shields for 20 years and has done tons of the LC's. He proceeds to pull out a moulding and show me how its better than what's on the truck right now, and that this is his personal stash of it. Says the company doesn't order it anymore, but he prefers it.
Score #3.

I won't get it replaced until next week, assuming the new glass has better optics. I'm hoping this guy does as nice of a job as he talks....at least he seems to have lots of experience with 100's.
I suppose my biggest point in all of this, is that once again I'm finding that aftermarket typically pales to factory specs. Obviously, the factory mould for the glass is better, and it may very well be thicker glass too (quieter).

Wow, I guess I got lucky on my last replacement. It was at the same time Tim had his done. We were on Spring break in Southern California. I got real lucky had a guy doing it that also had 20 years experience and new what he was looking for with Land Cruisers. Pointed out that the last guy that did it also did it correctly, I guess was his biggest concern as he was getting started. He had another guy show up, kind of like a trainer, that guy's attention to detail was not even close to the other guy, who kept asking him questions about his work.

I am missing one of the rivet covers though. Blew off in a head wind somewhere.

Finally had mine swapped yesterday. Overall satisfaction: Meh. Not terrible, but a little disappointed in the quality of the glass itself, and the installer slipped and nicked the paint at the bottom of the channel.

Honestly, this is a 2 banana job with only three specialized tools: Large suction cup, long knife, and a gasket cutter. Maybe 4 if you count the giant sealant gun he used to lay down the seal bead before plopping the glass. Took him about 45 mins, and I think with 2 people, you could do it yourself in less than a half hour.

1) Unscrew mirror
2) Remove side mouldings. Book says drill, but he popped the rivets with a putty knife in seconds.
3) Cut seal at both sides and top from the outside. He had a dragging knife of some kind that had two handles.
4) Push out windshield from the inside top edge and place a block between a-pillar and glass.
5) Take long knife and slice gasket between dash and glass
6) Lift out glass
7) Take a knife and cut away remaining gasket on the frame. No need to get down to metal.
8) Clean
9) Lay down new sealant bead
10) Drop glass into bottom channel and lay back against sealant
11) Use section cup to make position adjustments and then tape glass to roof
12) Install new seals with Toyota rivets
13) Press in covers
14) Reinstall mirror screws

Compared to installing corner windows in a 40, it was a breeze.
No squeaks, no whistle, new gasket at the top of the shield is better. Just wish the optics of the chinese glass was more like factory.

Does anyone have any up to date recommendations on 100 series windshield experts? I called Mike at Diamond and Rusty at Blue Ribbon and left messages a few times but have not received any reply back from either one.
