I’m very familiar with that guy. Agree with his findings. It’s too bad tire options are not nearly as good in 255’s. And I’ll admit it, the OEM tires are already tucked way into the fender. Wider just looks better. Plus according to the chart above 255s are harder to fit. Which also surprises me as it seems like the problem lies with width when you're turning. And skinny should be easier?

On my FJ the 285s rub on the frame. The 255s don't on the 4R (basically the same sus & frame)

My FJ has a 2" Toytek and they (285s) rub slightly on the frame. It never bothered me, I still wheeled it that way. Just get the 285s and run it. If they rub fix it. You will like the way it looks and "it's better to look good than to feel good"

Well it’s an AT, but I haven’t been stuck yet! :)

Less about stuck and more about stop. If I drive from the house down to the road with my ATs on my LC250 in many places I’m just along for the ride. If I have my snow tires on I’m in control. We need dedicated snow tires where we live.

After all the help here, tons of 4Runner forum (not really useful) and tons of YouTube videos (Tinkers, very useful) I think 285’s with a 1/2” spacer (yields 1”) to level it is the plan for now. With the stock wheels (17x7.5” +15mm offset) it should clear 285s without cutting.

I can’t wrap my head around why the TRD Pro wheels are only 7” wide. Bumping them out 11mm with the change in offset is desirable but could still cause clearance issues. Maybe they did it to discourage 285s as the narrow width drops them out of spec for the larger tire? 255s are in spec but then that would negate the extra stance width in offset.

Down the road I think I’ll point him into a 2” front 1” rear lift to maintain max articulation and road manors. Probably Ironman foam cells.
