In 1981, the trim/paint code (653 Olive) is on the passenger front fender.

Sweet, thanks guys. Mike I am not seeing it on the fender, where exactly? but you guys are correct, 653. The DuPont color 44286 may be helpful also.

Where do you guys stand on matching something existing vs. having it mixed from the original formula? I've heard that some of the base colors have shifted during the last 30 years or so, making the old formula not as reliable as it could be.

I want this:

Not this:

I am only painting the tub, so would prefer the hard top & doors to match.

I color matched the powder coat and was very surprised how well it matched. They need a minimum of 1"x1" sample and the computer does the rest. It even matched the amount of metal flake.

This is the plate with the color/trim codes. See if yours is on the firewall.

I got some rattle cans made using the color code for my 60 and it was a pretty close match. It's hard to get a perfect match to faded paint though!

I'll take a stab at it

C/TR/A/TM

Color 653
Trim LP11 (L= vinyl/leather 1x= gray/charcoal)
Axle K052 (Would be 3:73 in 81, K082 must be the code for 4:11)
Transmission H42

More on trim codes (jury is still out on what the 2nd and 4th digit means)
1976-78 LE11
1979-83 LP11

colors:
0x = Ivory/light colors
1x = grayish colors
2x = black color
3x = reddish colors
4x = browns
8x = blues

As to matching colors, are you pulling the engine Tim? If you are, there is a panel that covers up a bit of insulation around the exhaust near the engine tunnel. If you are removing the engine, you can remove that panel, and find a spot that was painted in the factory, but has never been exposed to UV light (and certainly for no appreciable length of time). We did, and had our 854 sky blue made using the factory mix (PPG). It matched perfectly the paint that had never been exposed to sun.

If you aren't painting the doors and hardtop, then aren't you restricted to whatever color they are today (and the computer's ability to match it)?

Why not just throw in the doors and roof to ensure a good match AND make it the color you want?

I'm surprised that Dan didn't catch that the axle ratio should be 3.70.

3.70? I also thought 3.73...

And I may do this in stages. Get the tub painted, get the soft top on, and get driving. Then install the hard top, drive all winter. Depending on what I decide this winter, paint the top pieces. Or not

That is the exact color of my 1976 that I am restoring, and it is my favorite FJ40 color - totally hides rust and mud!

3.70? I also thought 3.73...

Nope, 3.73 is a chebbie thing. 1979-1984 USA spec 40 series and all USA spec FJ60 Land Cruisers have 10 teeth on the pinion and 37 on the ring gear... 3.70

Dunno if there was a USA 1979 FJ55? Mike/Ige, you guys know?

4.11 is 9 on the pinion and 37 on the ring gear.

Crud. I must be getting soft in my old age.

Agreed.

Which is only somewhat annoying, because the 4.11 uses 37 teeth on the ring gear too (and 9 on the pinon) which means you have to count BOTH to be sure which is which.

So the computer match at PPg is no Bueno. Way too green, not enough brown.. Might be cool if you were starting over, but not a match
