First one looks like an engorged tick and the second maybe some kind of bot fly larva?

:thumb:

If the engorged Tick made Farnham itch, I wonder what reaction he will have to the thought of a Cuterebra fly larvae growing under his skin, or how he will react when I describe how I discovered it on Zan and it popped out when I pulled on the surrounding skin..... so coolly incredibly gross! :hill:

x2. I asked a buddy of mine who's an arachnologist at DMNS:

"That is the "Cat-faced spider" aka Araneus gemmoides, or, it is at least in the same genus of Araneus. I'm surprised in was living in such a housing. They are spiders that make the big bullseye web, so it might have been using the wheel as a retreat during the day."

yup. Araneus = Orb Weaver. I had one that lived under our front porch light in Denver. It would come out at night and spin webs, then hide out somewhere nearby during the day. ick!

We've squished two black widows this August/September so far. Coming in from the cold already I guess.

We had a kitty cat spider (hehe) living outside our front window for like a month last fall.

And after I knew what they were, I started to see them in random places. I rescued this one from a tree that @DanS was about to cut down. You can see its silk attached to my thumb.

And one camped out on the elk head sculpture that @DomOfTheDead made for us (you can see the antler/80 LCA behind the spider).

I see these all the time too, almost always on yellow flowers. Beware of the yellow flowers. 🤣
It’s pretty neat to see these small moments of specialization! I also jumped back when I was taking macro photos and saw this guy extremely close up. 😆

Yeah I'm generally not a fan of creepy crawlies. The yellow ones definitely fall into the creepy category for me. 😬

These yellow ones don’t bother me to much. The creepy yellows ones that love my dye studio freak me out. 😬

Even though I was born and raised in CO, it was at least 40+ years until I actually saw a black widow. A few years ago, my son came running inside from the front yard saying he saw one by the garage. My immediate reaction was, "nah, probably wasn't a black widow". Turned it over with a shovel, and sure enough it had the telltale red hourglass on it's belly.

I HATE spiders. 😳

Don't take the Black Widow lightly....About 10 years ago, I was leaning on my bed to pick something up off the floor. Felt a little something on my forearm, brushed it off mushing it in to a squishy black ball of spider. As the day went on, I developed a cluster of blisters around the area where the spider was. Took some benadryl, and figured it was all good...heck, I'm a big guy, and the spider was little... As the day turned to night I could feel the venom creeping up my arm towards my chest. Very slowly. I'm thinking "it'll wear off". Now heading in to the early hours of the morning when I woke my wife up, and asked her to drive me to the emergency room. The venom had worked its way up my arm, and was starting to effect my chest.
Spent the rest of the night on IV muscle relaxers along with some other medical soup to calm the venom. They wouldn't give me the Black Widow anti-venom because the spider wasn't positively identified as a Widow, and the meds would have made it worse if they administered them.
Long story short, it took about 4 days after the spider bite to recover from it. I now kill Black Widows on the spot...

This is just the average creepy crawly thing down in New Mexico......Have no clue what it is, just not happy they are out there around your campsite!
