Is it possible some folks or a folk would think they could squeeze that kind of money out of some northern people, or am I just being a cynic?
His prices are always like that. He keeps advertising stuff for sale going on 3-4 years now, so he must be selling stuff and making a business out of it. Seems like he primarily markets to the FB crowd, who are - in my experience - less knowledgeable about their resources. Those are the guys with a truck they just bought off BAT (or sometimes a rust bucket they bought locally) asking where they can buy an air filter or spark plugs. Usually no ability to look up part numbers or can't be bothered to call their local Toyota parts counter. And a good portion of them don't seem to know that any of the forums exist. Maybe that's a cynical view ... but that seems to be his target market.

Well I can't hate on the guy. The value of any one thing is exactly what you can convince someone to pay. I personally have a retirement dream of hoarding pre-00's Toyotas to give parts away. Money shmoney

I get that. Go get the money. At the same time folks like this (him and about three other people on FB) drive the market price up for the rest of us. The vast majority aren't in the parts flipping business, we're buyers, so in the long run it seems to hurt 95% of Cruiser owners, while benefitting 5%. Or maybe it's 99% and 1%, I don't know. You see them posting these huge prices, then when somebody comes along with a price that's more in line with the rest of the market, the FB crowd goes gaga over it: "Oh my god, that rear hatch is only $400, what a screaming deal!" The consumer is being trained by a very small minority to accept a $1000 rear hatch with mediocre paint, when in reality they can look around for about 5 minutes and find hatches all day long for $400. So the "value that people are willing to pay" is something they're being conditioned into - or they're just lazy and they pay over double for a lot of stuff that's available at much more reasonable prices. That doesn't necessarily mean that item inherently has that higher value, it's just what dupes are willing to pay.

In addition to that, while most of the time the small group of FB parts flippers are parting out pretty terrible trucks, they absolutely aren't afraid of chopping up a perfectly viable truck that could be put on the road. That hurts.

I've been watching these guys for a few years and obviously have some opinions. No apologies for that though.

Why buy a fixed top when you can buy a removable top SWB! I’ve debated listing mine recently, if anyone is in the market I’d be happy to talk.

Around 2021 or 2022 this thing sat on the street near in my neighborhood for about 6 months - exactly like the 3rd or 4th photo in the ad. Never moved, half covered in a tarp. Then it disappeared. The current photos show it near Bruce Randolph High School at a building on the NW corner of 40th & Steele.

ORANGE!

I've been eyeballing that, although I can't really make that sort of move around the holidays.

The dollar to value ratio on pre-VVTI 100 Series trucks is just unbelievable right now. Yeah it needs a few things, but all-in it's still a whole lot of vehicle for the money. And they pop up at this price 1-2x every week.

I keep telling all my friends looking for used toyotas the 100 market is a pretty awesome value right now.

Trying to convince one to do that instead of a taco and save around 10k.

After you replace an $1100 brake booster, install a starter and knock sensors in the vee, replace AHC components, the timing belt, valve cover gaskets, HVAC bits, tilt/telescope motors, brakes, tires, the fuel pump, seat covers, HVAC buttons, etc., the value proposition drops a bit.

I love my 100, but compared to my (280K mile) '98 4Runner, it eats parts like a 25 year old GM product.

But prices are still pretty high for the 3rd gen 4runners. I saw one on CL (5-spd with the locker) priced for about triple what I bought mine for 12 years ago and higher miles! And it wasn't just a one-off "I know what I've got" type of guy. Totally normal 3rd gen pricing these days.

Errr...guilty as charged. I sold mine on BaT in '23 for twice what I paid for it in 2007, after putting 150K more miles on it. Frankly, after 17 years with it, I was bored of it.

our 98 4runner with 358k miles is our most reliable vehicle we own!
As far as prices.... I see them all over the place. 4k to 20k.... Seems most decent once are in the 7k range.
I've been paying attention to them more lately... our almost 14 year old wants one for his first vehicle.

I bought 4th Gen 4runners as first cars for both my boys and Robin's oldest son. I had Green Chile that I bought from John Henley and damn I wish I still, had it. I don't want Ty driving the 100 at CU so I need to find a decent 3rd Gen. Love 'em!

Ouch, not my experience.
I have two, one for 15 years and the other for 5. Just routine maintenance like brakes, the TB and WP every 90k, tires, a steering rack, rear drive shaft, a starter, coupe alternators.
All in all minor stuff for all the miles and years they have served us very well.
