I think they still check for codes dont they in addition to the dyno run?
It depends on the year of the vehicle but for most cars 1982 to 00s they run the IM240 rolling road test, look under the car for the cat, and check the gas cap seals. OBD has no impact on the pass/fail grade luckily.

I believe newer cars can pass only by plugging in to OBD, but if it fails that they can pass by being clean on the IM240 test.

Apparently I can't pull up the Air Care Colorado site on my phone otherwise I'd link the page but if you Google Air Care Colorado IM240 you'll see the test info.

A 74 would just be a straight up collector plate not subject to the mileage limitation

They have never checked mileage on my 40 with the collector plate. The affidavit Seems to be an honor thing...then again, I drive less than 4K miles a year in it.

Just got my love letter from the state. They don't require an emissions test since I have one on record from before I got my Collectors Plates, so I'll take it! I do have to sign the mileage affidavit though...

Would this be the same case for a 94 80 series? If and when the time comes, could I try and register my 80 as a collector but only be able to drive it 4500 miles a year? Also are you still required to get an emissions test done every year or every other year?

that's good to know! My 60 now qualifies for the 5 year plates and was curious if I had to re-test it.

I think the rules for newly granted collectors vehicles requires an emissions test every registration renewal. Mine doesn't need one because it was grandfathered into the program in 2009. I've had collectors plates since 2005.

I mean, how do you really know if you drive it more than 4500 miles per year? Are odometers required to be calibrated and certified?

I am so glad I moved to Utah from Colorado. Just did 2 collectors plates this week. No problem.

You have a defective vehicle if the odometer isn't working correctly. Add on citation fine! ;-)

I've wondered about verifying the limited mileage limit. Unless you sell the truck and a new title is issued is a State Trooper going to do a road side check? I assume you have to tell the clerk updated mileage each renewal but that's of course on your honor.

I think they average the mileage out. If you’re like me, and have to do emissions every 5 years, they take the new number against the mileage from 5 years earlier.

However, if you’re not subject to emissions, there’s no checking it.

I just got my 5 year collector plate renewal today and it's $147.32 for 5 years (without the state park pass). This is quite a bit cheaper than in the past. Who'd have guessed? I'm grandfathered on my '78 FJ40 that I've owned since 1990 - guess I'll stay on top of this 'deal'.

Be aware that the DMV apparently screws renewals up sometimes. I received my renewal earlier this year for my 76 that is grandfathered in and it said I needed an emissions test. I'd be screwed because it currently doesn't have an engine in it and I would loose my grandfathered plates. However, being grandfathered, I'm not supposed to fall under the requirement to get emissions. So I called the DMV and pointed this out and they agreed and fixed it in their system. I sent in my payment and got my tags in the mail.

While getting a plate for my '93 FZJ, I overheard a DMV employee telling someone that 'with Collector plates you pay for 3 years of the 5 years the plate is good for, and this is your discount'. I was not able to engage this DMV employee and ask her to explain more. This could be folklore for all I know.

This might explain why my FJ40 now costs $147/5 years, and many years ago, I was paying ~$250/5 years.

Could it be that the DMV lowered the price of something? Hard to imagine it's so, but I'll take it.

I guess after reading this I should not tell the state I have had the beetle sitting unregistered in our driveway for 18 months.

Im sure they will have their way with me when we finally are ready to go get plates.
