Best new car design in … 30, maybe 40 years. Discuss.

The formless rear bumper loses some points in my book, as does the plastic lower bits which has been increasingly popular for the past decade. If Rivian was really brave they would have gone with no screen on the dash and done tactile buttons and knobs only … but we are in 2024 and everybody wants an iPad next to the steering wheel. But the body lines are impeccable. Wheels are 10/10. And yes, I like the Rivian headlights and light bar on the front.

At least they’re copying from the best.

That looks like my old 86 Golf, that was always one of my favorite cars from my youth. Before I got into 4x4s the hot hatch was always at the top of my list, with the Delta Integrale being the pinnacle dream. I don't love the Rivian headlights yet but they may grow on me over time, but the profile looks great!

I like the design as well!

My only concern is that it’s going to be so much larger than those iconic examples of similar design.

Aren’t they saying it’s a crossover? It’s hard to get a sense of size in all the pics I’ve seen.

@shellb Ah, good observation on the size. Those older cars probably had 14” wheels and this new Rivian probably has 17” - that’s kind of throwing my sense of proportion off. Bigger than a Golf is fine, but I hope it’s not too big.

I just can’t get past those nostril running lights. On all Rivians. I do like the muscular Rabbit/Golf bigger brother look in profile, though.

@HDavis I want your big opinion.
This is probably the first electric car we will own. It hits all of those nostalgic notes that we love in a hatch. The r3x even steps it up a notch because it's fast but has the stance of the Fiat panda 4x4 or Niva. Another thing you don't show, Rivian took a note out of the book from those same precedents you shared in their approach to the interior. Its minimal but with artistic flair and creativity while applying a modern twist in the application of more sustainable materials. I do agree with @shellb I hope it's not too big, that's what made those other cars leave lasting impressions in our minds, small low powered engines in a small chassis that made them handle and feel like you were driving a go cart. I hope they can tap into that visceral feeling that the precedent cars offered.

People's Soviet Socialist Republic of California,
Supposedly the R3X will be in the $37-47k range. Not quite VW Rabbit prices but still very interesting.

Any idea what size tires it's sitting on above (or at the reveal) to add some scale?
I dig the 4xGolf styling.

The R3X is pretty cool. And with hindsight being 20-20 - This vehicle should have been the vehicle first introduced by Rivian. But with delivery probably beyond 2026 will Rivian even be in business beyond 2024 to deliver the affordable R2 and then the R3X?

I saw the R3 in clay inside the closely guarded design studio a little over a year ago and thought "Wow this is amazing - but I doubt this design gets approved". I was stoked to see it during the reveal yesterday and hope it makes it to production largely in its current form. By far the best news I heard yesterday is R2 will start production in the Normal facility where R1 is currently being produced instead of waiting for the new factory to be built outside Atlanta. The faster R2 makes it to market the better chances for the company going forward.

I saw that last night for the first time and really like it. Should take a bite out the the Subaru market share. I've always loved the Rivian styling. The R2 doesn't do it for me but this one does along with the truck. If price stays under $50K they should sell a bunch.

ATL factory put on ice, so definitely good.

Where?

Price is supposedly $37k-47k for the R3 and R3X, depending on trim level and options.
