I already had all new parts, except for the knuckle studs...I did not see any mention of shims in the threads on replacing the studs..hope it is straight forward....

The shim is in the trunion bearing cap.

Did you get the knuckle studs?

Timm,

If you need any parts or a hub socket still let me know...I have a complete set of OEM parts for the front axle service (still need to do mine including replacing the DS knuckle one of these days :() and I have a hub socket...

I should be around all day Sunday so give me a call if you need anything

got the knuckle studs and nuts and cone washers...not too nervous about the axle stuff, I just did it in June, and I have the great FAQ from Romer. A little more nervous about the trunion bearings and knuckle studs.

I grabbed a 54mm socket at Sears....well, the 2 1/8 one, thanks for the tip!

$180 seems pricey for one side of trunion bearings. Did you get wheel bearings too?

nope. the 180 included about 50 for all the knuckle studs, nuts, cone washers...it was Derrick so I am sure I got the good discount...

sounds like this is an all too common problem...and can be pretty dangerous. everyone please go out and check yours now...

and next wheel bearing packing party we might want to order up a few knuckle studs just in case...

If the studs are broken (it looks like some of the bottom ones are), it was probably from the hit and run. That would allow the knuckle to wallow out of place, causing the seal to leak, etc.

You can get a whole rebuild kit, including trunnion bearings, for about $120 from any of the vendors.

Just an update if anyone cares. All is well. Took the weekend, but it got done. Late Saturday I was torn down to the bare knuckle and ready to start putting it all back together....and Stevinson had given me the WRONG trunion bearings. I even checked all the part numbers...on the invoice. Luckily Jeff Zettl had his parts ordered and I was able to run over there and keep working. Thanks to Robbie for also offering to drop some off, and to Ken for offering to get me his parts and run for the parts I needed. As usual Rising Sun Rocks. :)

:risingsun:

Surprisingly the grease looked great, was a straight forward job, even the trunion bearings which I did not do at the Wheel Bearing Packing Party, thanks to Ken's great FAQ at Mud.

Thanks to all!
