I need a GMRS radio. I know how to push the button and talk and I can find the weather radio on my handheld. Otherwise, I am ignorant.
I want a truck mounted radio with weather and I want it to reach out as far as possible. I like the ghost style antenna but not tied to it. I want something I can put under the seat and plug a mic with the controls on it. Easy to unplug and toss in the console when not in use. I also like discounts for members! Can we use repeaters for a longer reach? It would be sweet if we could!
What are my options and the pros and cons of those?
I'm guessing that with CM coming up, there will be some promo codes from vendors at CM.

Hit me with your knowledge!

If I were in the market for a new GMRS I would probably get the Midland 575. You can mount the control box out of sight, and just use the mic.

I also like the idea of having Ham capabilities as well. @JohnnyP runs this one and I think it’s a good option too.

Slee has the GME radios in stock. Has the mic controls but only listed at 5watts. I thought they were more than that?

I can’t speak for the difference in available GMRS power. My handheld GMRS radios are 5watts and they have worked fine so far but given a choice I use my HAM. Rarely set over 5 watts.

This thread is a good start and likely will help answer your questions, and several you will think of as you go forward.

MXT575 is nice and I think 50W is unnecessary for our trail use GMRS. I have been very happy with the MXT275.
I am now getting to know the GME. I am sure their presentation at Slee next week will be great.

Antenna location is arguably the most important variable in this whole equation. Height is might, as some say. Roof top mount is miles better than other locations. Get the antenna up high and a 15 watt rig is gold.

Everyone talking about Midland and GME for a GMRS, both are well established brands. It'll be interesting to see how GME impacts the U.S. market. I'll give Midland credit for their dedication to pushing GMRS forward and offering something interesting.

However, adding these features to the mix I might be thinking something beyond GME or Midland.

A couple that come to mind are the Baofeng GMRS-50V2, Wouxun KG-XS20G and Wouxun KG-1000G.

The reason is that these radios cover GMRS but can also do splits for repeaters, do both narrow and wide bandwidth (this makes it compatible with both FRS and repeaters) and to the point can cover reception on VHF and UHF. This is important if you want to listen to NOAA Weather Radio, which is on VHF, or monitor ham which can be either VHF (we call it 2 meters) or UHF (we use 70 cm). These radios can also be customized using a computer, so you can put together channels how you want, design scan lists like you want.

There are downsides to these radios. The big one is the face does not come off the radio for remote mounting. This makes it tough to find a place for them.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record I have to remind everyone what @Johnny Utah mentions about a ham radio requires you to pass the Technician license test to transmit (you do not need a license to listen) and it's against FCC rules to modify and use a ham radio to transmit on GMRS.

Speaking of licenses, remember that to use GMRS radios (which are ones with an external or detachable antenna, higher power and can do repeaters) you need a GMRS license. There is no test like you have to do with ham. You just need to get an FRN number (this is your FCC account number) and set yourself up in the ULS, pay your fee and they issue you a license and call sign.

I'm happy to discuss all things GME with you. This Thursday, we are at Slee: https://risingsun4x4club.org/xf/threads/movie-tacos-night-at-slee-29-january-gmrs-gme.38667/

GME are a "vendor" at CM this year. We don't sell direct (which is a bit different, but intentional), and you can obtain them from dealers like Slee (...assuming that is something you want).
