Turbo in and packed. Can't say the test drive showed any improvement, but we'll be watching closely. I plan on leaving ridiculously early and driving easy to see how it goes. If something looks off, I will pull the plug and jump in with someone or bag it all together and turn around. Should have a good idea what the story is after the passes.
If it's just a little smoke, I will just assume my normal position at the back. :)

Just tweaked my suspension a little, oh crawling around underneath in the dark while it's cold, how I've missed you!

I still need food, but don't know what I want to bring. I've got hot dogs and that's it so far.

3:15am central time finds us cruising through central Kansas (left Indiana around 5pm). Have to stop somewhere and run wires for the new fridge.

Any recommendations for CO2 refill places in Moab? I know the tool rental place

this 4x4 place just south of town on the side of HWY fills CO2

http://www.moab4x4outpost.com/

It is called "the moab 4x4 outpost" its a fairly large 4wd shop. During the day cruising through town you won't miss it... it is on your left as you are heading south out of town.

don't push too hard, rest if you have to.

planning for spring break

I am planning a similar trip for late March. Is there a route that can take us from Devil's kitchen through Beef Basin etc. then on to Hite this time of year?

Going from Hite then onto Doll House would it be better to go in or out through Poison Spring thinking of trying to make good time getting back to Colorado Springs.

Yeah late March I wouldn't worry about it. We did it in November, and there as a bit of snow but nothing we couldn't pass. If it's too snowy, then just turn around and go back to Canyonlands to play. But I haven't seen much snow down that low, in March.

Your fastest route home from Doll House is straight back to Hite Crossing, then north to Hanksville. Art & I made it home from Dollhouse to Denver in 14 hours once- it could have been 12.5, but it was super snowy and we got stopped on Vail Pass for a while, it was slow going from Glenwood the rest of the way in. I had 10 gallons of gas with me, dumped it all in at the dollhouse and I think we made it to Fruita before needing gas again.

That helps. I was just looking at campsite availability and now I am thinking of this route, basically reverse of before.

day 1 -Springs to Maze overlook
day 2- Maze to Doll house
day 3- Doll House chill day (or skip extra Doll House day and bump remaining days up one)
day 4- out Poison Spring/Dirty Devil to Beef Basin general area (gas in Hite)
day 5 - Devils Kitchen (or Bobby Joe depending on availability and day 3 option)
day 6 - back to Springs

Is this doable and any suggestions on extra gas? Couple of 80's, 100, Cherokee, Wrangler, and a 4runner.

This section seems like your biggest time crunch. Poison Spring toward 95 and all the way around and into Beef Basin will take a lot of time. You didn't mention which way into Beef Basin either. You will basically drive all day, set up camp, then pack up the next morning to make Devils Kitchen without getting to spend any time in Beef Basin.

You should start your own thread rather than this oldie from 2011. ;)

Thanks and your right. I had thought it would be a quick question...haha

The planning thread is on the CLC site.

Actually it's a fun trip down memory lane.

CO-Hunter - A couple of additional thoughts in addition to what's been said. The route from Beef Basin out toward Hwy 95/Hite does crest fairly high in elevation - seems like 7-8000'. Depending on recent snows in March, you could run into some snow/mud. It should be passable under most circumstances, but not a bad idea to have a backup plan.

And maybe it goes without saying, but check the water levels for the Dirty Devil before picking that route through Poison Springs. It's arguably the most fun and scenic route, but not the fastest in any scenario.

Agree with jacket that was a great run and brings back fantastic memories. I did a full clockwise navigation of canyonlands by adding white rim.

My .02 is that you have some long days. Now that's great when it's a guys tip. Will the family be used to long expedition days? The short days are half days or more and the long days are long. Not much room to explore overlooks side roads, ruins, etc. The long days have the potential to be really long if your not familiar with area, have a break down, encounter weather or muddy trails, etc. The nice thing is you can always decide to mix things up when you get there if there is camp site availability

Yeah you've got some long days. Doable, but long. Like Wes says, get a few mixups and you'll maybe fall short of the target destinations. Just remember wheeling fast = more fuel usage. Hard to say what you'll need but just look at mileage and pace and see how it compares to previous trips. That kokopeli trip could be a good indicator of range and fuel consumption depending on how closely you are going to match that pace.

If you guys wheel FAST and are OK with a lot of saddle time (all day) then carry a lot of fuel and do it. If not, I'd re-arrange. Also, I'll echo Wes' comment about camping, you have the potential to mix things up based on schedule. remember some areas are outside of the National parks (think the hans flat ranger station area, la sals, beef basin, blue notch) and can be used without reservations in case plans change.

Thanks for all the great feedback, I really appreciate it. I am thinking I need to reconsider and maybe not be too ambitious about trying to see too much, especially since none of us have been there before. I knew going out Poison Springs to Beef Basin would be long but didn't realize the next day getting to Bobby Joe Camp site or Devils Kitchen would take that long from Beef Basin.

The Beef Basin route would be via Elk Ridge Rd/Gooseberry Rd. but I heard there is another route that connects north of Blanding, I am guessing that is taking Beef Basin / 211 near newspaper rock.

The challenge is that Devil's kitchen is not available for our day 5 Wed. night. and dang it Bobby Joe camp just filled up for our Day 5. No one seems to want New Bates Wilson camp site. Doll House and Maze are available for our first days but not our last days so it looks like we need to run it in the direction I outlined.

With families we certainly want to explore, discover, hike, and relax a bit. Any suggested modifications to the schedule would be appreciated. Perhaps skip the extra play day at Doll House and spend it on the trail to Dirty Devil Crossing, flow dependent of course.

day 1 -Springs to Maze overlook (camp)
day 2- Maze to Doll house (camp)
day 3- out Poison Spring/Dirty Devil camp somewhere along route
day 4- (gas in Hite) Beef Basin general area and camp
day 5 - explore joint trail, and other hikes and camp at New Bates
day 6 - back to Springs

Explore as much as possible along the way. Sound more reasonable?

As for gas, I would like to use 200 miles as a planning figure counting no extra fuel. As for Kokopelli, if I recall we took an extra 5 gallons each but could have done without it, though it would have been more stressful seeing the gas gauge that low..

It's just hard to do maze and needles in one trip they are very close as crow flies but takes all day to get from one to another.

Barry and I have crashed horsehof or bobby Jo before. It wasn't bad. Not as cool as kitchen but interesting things to do and see from camp. It was just different perspective we weren't expecting.

I would try it just know some backup plans like house on fire or arch canyon if in case cottonwood rd is muddy as hell.

Do you all think a stock '86 4Runner with a green driver would make the trip as described?

hmmm. Probably, there are only a few obstacles that might be challenging and the Dirty Devil is a wild card depending on flow. Green driver could slow you down and increase the chances of a break-down and your route requires you making good time. Make sure they know their vehicle and that it's in good enough mechanical shape for the route.

As long as you're flexible and willing to change things up, you should be alright.

Dan's 3rd gen made it in and out with only 1 size larger tires. His does have the factory diff lock, but that's it. I will say that Dan has wheeled quite a bit before, so that factors in to it. Teapot or whatever it's called has some challenges getting down that way. I think the biggest thing is quality tires and some good line picking. Assuming the truck is in excellent mechanical otherwise. That's not a great place to break down since it's so far out.
