I thought the overlap between vintage KitchenAids and Toyota people might make this worth a post. I snagged a broken KitchenAid K5-A off Facebook this weekend with the plan to restore it. This model is one of the older ones and is around the early 60s.
After tearing into it I found the sacrificial worm gear was stripped and was planning on just replacing it, but after a few YouTube rabbit holes I determined upgrading the electronics to the Solid State internals, the next version of this thing in the 70s would be fun. Waiting on a bunch of parts, anyone have a suggestion for sand blasting and powder coating for small projects? I can't remember place I used for the 40, just that it was down south.

Ha Yes, Nice work! I have rebuilt 1. I have another 1 from my wifes catering class that stripped the worm gears when the cap screws came loose. Problem is i think i shorted the motor. It doesn't turn on and i replaced the small circuit phase board. I need to get back to it.

Ours is hardly vintage but this thread reminds me I need to tear it down and do some PM.
Pretty well documented maintenance videos! It's not as greasy as a knuckle rebuild but it's pretty close.

They still carry the motors pretty cheap replacement! I think a multimeter would confirm your motor diagnosis

@AdamKFarmer nice score! The Hobart Kitchen Aide mixers are superior to the later Whirlpool version.

Hobart mixers and their durability hold a special place in my heart as I’ve spent quite a few years with them and had several of various sizes (20-140qt).

When I was purchasing a 1951 Hobart 80qt mixer I stumbled upon an ad put out by Hobart looking for the oldest mixer still in use.

In 2006, Hobart conducted another search for the oldest piece of equipment still in operation and found a 1913 model mixer still being used daily at Winian Chocolates and Coffees in Ohio.

That's amazing! Haha yes the older ones are bulletproof. I'm hoping swapping out the motor for the solid state will let run for another 60 years! Also look at these sweet powder choices. I'm going Hartford
