I got my license along with a pretty good number of other club members. Recently I got a renewal notice in the mail from a 3rd party registration service. Just an FYI you can renew your license for free on the FCC webpage. The 3rd party company wanted $7.00 Not a big deal, but as it was my first renewal I almost sent it in just assuming that was the standard deal.

So just a heads up as many of you may be receiving the same thing in the mail.

Corbet is right, renewing your ham license is free with the FCC. You will have been assigned an FRN in the ULS, which means a FCC Registration Number in the Universal Licensing System. You can find that by your call sign.

http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/index.htm?job=home

You just have to go in to verify your information and punch the clock on another renewal period. The FCC basically wants to make sure you still want your license and that you haven't gone silent key.

Now realize that you guys with vanity calls signs may have a fee to pay and do an extra step if you want to keep it. If you don't pay it the call sign will eventually go back into the pool and I think you will be assigned a new sequential call sign. There was some talk I think about eliminating the vanity call fee but I can't say what the rules are currently. Just be aware of it and check.

Argh! I tried to renew mine through the FCC ULS but can't remember the password I used 10 years ago...

I also have such a cryptic security question I can't remember that either.

I may end up paying the fine folks at ARS the $7 to overcome my lameness. :)

Here is a good description of how to get it done (if you remember your password) from the FCC ULS site (from here ):

Filing Electronically using the Universal Licensing System

You may renew your license through the Universal Licensing System (ULS) at any time within 90 days of the expiration date for the license and up to two years after the license expires.
To renew, go to the ULS Home, select Online Filing, and follow the instructions below.

Login to the ULS License Manager with your FCC Registration Number (FRN).
From your License At A Glance page, choose the Renew link in the right hand menu called Work on this License. When your license is within the renewal period of 90 days before the expiration date until the expiration date, or within the 2 year grace period allowed there after the Renew link will appear. If your license is not eligible for renewal the link will not appear.
On the Select Updates page, review the licensee information displayed beneath the table of license information. If any of the data is missing or out of date you must update it. Click on the box to the left of the Licensee Information heading to insert a checkbox and select it.
When ready click Continue.
Answer the questions on the Applicant Questions page, and click Continue when ready.
On the Licensee Information page, review and update all of your licensee information. Make any corrections that are necessary.
On the Summary page review the information you have entered. If you wish to make additional changes, click the Edit button next to the section of your application you wish to Edit. You will be able to return to that page of the application. Make the desired change and select the Return to Summary button.
When ready to submit your update to the Commission, choose the Continue to Certify button.
After reading the certification, enter your first and last names in the boxes at the bottom of the page. You MUST sign the application. When finished choose the Submit Application button.
From the ULS Confirmation screen, we recommend you print a copy of your application and/or the Confirmation screen itself from your web browser.
Note: The address and contact information you have entered in CORES registration will not be automatically associated with your licenses. To change the address or other contact information on your license, you must update your information in ULS or submit Form 605 manually.

And if you don't - this isn't rocket surgery.

Perhaps I do over think it. I don't know what clicking that link does, though. There may be more layers to the onion.

After some hassle (because I did not remember all my security questions) I am renewed at no cost.

Did you guys actually use the Renew menu option? My license shows as expiring on 11/10/2018, and I went and updated some demographic data associated with my profile. When I select Renew, it doesn't show my call sign as eligible for renewal. If I toggle to ineligible, then KD0FQQ shows up. Odd.

You have to wait until 3 months before and then it will show eligible
