Pamphlets and stuff...
I found my files that have the descriptions and maps for most of the scenic places that will be visited on this run. I will make sure Perry has them for this year as well. It is hard to believe that this run is almost 10 years old.
The pamphlet is something I created for the first Ghost Town run in 2005. I did it so that whomever was the co-pilot in each rig could read the interesting facts about where the run went. It was like the audio guidebooks like you see at the zoo and stuff, just on paper. That way folks weren't like "why did we stop here?"
Here is a sample map of the aforementioned Tomichi Pass (that is not part of the official run)...
As you can see, this was an aggressive side trip that didn't leave much time for potlucks or hanging out in the campground having a beer. The first run did not have Tomichi Pass in it. It was too rainy, and even though I had done planning months ahead, all of the official USFS campgrounds were full. Luckily, we found the big open space that we used several years for this run that worked perfect.
This view looks NNW towards the west entrance as you come from Pitkin. This area with the little tent is where the potluck and socializing was, around a big fire pit.
This was the view in front of my campsite looking west towards Gunnison.
This view shows all the little places to park, most big enough for a large tent or a popup, looking east towards Hancock Pass.
This was my campsite with my popup and Bruce's camper.
I usually went up Tuesday or Wednesday before the run and stayed a few days to ensure the space wasn't occupied when the run came through. This area has always been pretty popular due to its secluded sites, available primitive camping and sheer beauty.
